Daily Inspiration: Meet Datreese Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Datreese Thomas.

Hi Datreese, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Heyy! My name is Datreese Thomas, I am 23 years old. I am currently a student at The University of Houston where I major in Economics with a minor in Technology in Entrepreneurship. I am also the creator and CEO of The Melanie Dolls. Which is a black doll company that I created to show young black girls who feel insignificant in their skin, how to look at themselves and feel beautiful, gain self-love, and develop courage.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ummm.. To be completely honest it has not been an easy path. Attempting to create something like The Melanie Dolls, which we have never seen before was very difficult. I come from a working-class family, with 2 parents who did not go to college; so I never had the opportunity to see successful business people, or CEO’s and entrepreneurs in my community. So being able to see myself as one at an early age was a little difficult. Also being a full-time student at a not-so-easy university, and being a full-time entrepreneur was very difficult to balance in the past.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I want the readers to know that my work is a clear reflection of my own black experience. Everything that The Melanie Dolls embody, represent, and teach little girls are the exact things that I had to learn for myself as well. So I’m currently focused on global business development, and getting my company to countries that will be largely impacted by The Melanie Doll’s mission, and of course, I’m focused on graduating lol.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I expect to see a change in the way that black girls/women feel about themselves, and how they see themselves individually and collectively. I also expect to see more diversity in the retail industry space. I strongly believe that our dolls will inspire so many creatives that work with other huge toy companies.
