Conversations with Kamryn Lovett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamryn Lovett.

Kamryn Lovett

Hi Kamryn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was very young, I’ve been fascinated with all things creepy and theatrical. I would spend countless hours watching YouTube tutorials, haunted house walk-throughs, and behind-the-scenes horror movies. One day, I decided to try makeup by recreating a ‘Monster High’ character look using the makeup my mom gave me as a kid. After that, I sat and practiced every chance I got for years, doing fun characters and glamorous looks. I didn’t have much for an SFX kit, so I would use toilet paper and liquid latex to make prosthetics and then paint the looks with eyeshadows. Once heavily invested, I saved money to expand my kit and applied to my first gig at 13th Floor Haunted House as soon as I turned 18. This opened the door to many more opportunities, where now I am a makeup artist for mass casualty event simulations and two feature films!

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
I ran into struggles like product expiring or not working as hoped, but the main one was building my kit. SFX makeup can be expensive for necessities, so practicing my art without the proper tools was difficult. In the end, it taught me to adapt and how to make illusions using the tools I do have.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do all makeup (e.g., glam, theatrical, character, SFX) but specialize in special effects. I enjoy creating cuts, blood work, sores, and all the creepy, gory stuff. When looking at my career, I’m known for my wounds/abrasions. But, recently, I have had people recognize my transformative/character makeup, like what I do for 13th Floor and what I have done for some upcoming films. I am most proud of my character looks, such as the Na’vi from ‘Avatar’ and Joel from ‘The Last of Us.’ I love taking something from the screen and bringing it to life through makeup. My determination and devotion to perfect each look I create sets me apart from others. I strive to satisfy the audience, and seeing their awes and reactions to my art is fulfilling.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There is so much to give credit; I would have an extremely long list if I named everyone. But I want to credit those who have trusted me and brought me on projects to expand my portfolio, such as JoJo Delgado, Anthony Saldivar, Jackson Kibby Productions, Stryde Studios, and Simply Rosy Productions. I also want to credit Margaret Beaver for helping me kick my profession into full gear by developing my website and spreading my name into the network. Most of all, I want to credit my family and significant other for uplifting and pushing me daily to chase my career. They have been my models, financially invested in my craft, and even when it gets tough, they have my back and celebrate every little victory I get.
