Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Medlin.
Hi Abigail, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The start of my journey was what I would consider an ideal example of, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. In my case, I thought they would make a nice pop of color as a garnish on a charcuterie board. I was a new mother and wife, fresh out of college with my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. My initial plan was to take a year off to enjoy some time with my son before I would throw myself into my next adventure, my career. Well, life had other plans and not just for me, but for the entire planet! Once the pandemic hit, it was going to be hard finding a new job and we also didn’t think it was an ideal time to send our son into childcare if we didn’t have to. One day while my son was napping I decided to thumb through YouTube. One of my favorite models had recently started a YouTube channel and of course, I watched every episode! On one of her videos, she had invited the now charcuterie icon, Cheese Gal then known as Nashville Cheese Gal, and did a step by step tutorial on charcuterie design. I thought, “How cute is that?!” A few days later as fate would have it, my cousin-in-law suggested we put one together one night and I enjoyed it so much!! A good friend of mine saw my work and asked if I would put one together for his girlfriend for teacher appreciation week. I agreed and when he came to pick it up, he told me that I had a knack and talent for it. He made the suggestion that maybe I should consider starting my own business. That night I discussed it with my husband and we agreed that maybe I try starting small and seeing where it took us. I made an Instagram and showcased my work that week and it’s almost two years later. I have made wonderful friends and met clients that have become family. I couldn’t have dreamed up a better outcome that God had in store.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not at all. There have been plenty of smooth moments but between being a mom, wife, homemaker, business owner, and doing it all between Covid spikes presents plenty of struggles along the way. It has been all about practicing balance. I say practice because all of the things I listed are ever changing. One, some, or all of those things need more attention at different times so it’s not really something that can ever be fully mastered. I guess flexibility is also a major part as well.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I was recently hired at Aethera Engineers and I am an Electrical Graduate Engineer. I currently work as a lighting/electrical designer for residential and commercial buildings.
Professionally I would say that I am most proud of finding purpose in a time of great adversity. Personally, being a mother is something I am so very proud of. Being a mother for me is becoming someone you’re proud of in hopes of giving your children the same desire within themselves. For me, the two go hand in hand.
What sets me apart from others is my drive. Once I’ve made my mind up about something I’ll crawl until I run. I can be shameless at times. I’ll come in last, I’ll take the class for the third time, I can take the L. Yes my pride may take a hit but nothing compares to when you finally get to where you’re going. I’m not too afraid of failing or worrying about what others think of me in the process. God is my rock and there is always a lesson to take away from every failure and in it you learn a little more about yourself and what you’re made of each time you have a setback.
What matters most to you?
First and foremost, my faith. I have learned to put God first and I have never had more peace or joy in my life, no matter what my life season is in. He’s what makes me who I am, and is responsible for how far and how successful I am today. Everything I have, I’ve prayed for.
Second, is my son. He makes my whole world go round. My son brings heaven on earth. He’s my motivation, even before he was born. I made most of the decisions in my life with my future children in mind. I wanted to be the best person I could not only for myself but for them.
