Today we’d like to introduce you to Aara Abu Laban.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I started working as a psychologist with refugee programs overseas in countries like Lebanon, Syria, and Romania. I was designing programs to support people after they experienced trauma. I returned to the United States to obtain another mental health and wellness degree. I was attracted to integrating mental health services with things that could be implemented in people’s lives outside of a therapeutic process. While attending New York University, I began to work with US Military veterans as a Combat Stress Recovery Specialist, assisting them by using adventure-based therapy and combining it with therapeutic methods. Now, I have opened my mental health practice, Revivify Therapeutics, where I assist women in reconnecting back to themselves so that they can have healthy relationships with the people around them, allowing them to heal from hard life moments so that it is a chapter in their book rather than the whole book.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
You don’t know what you don’t know until you know it. Taking the chance to open up your own business is, without a doubt, the hardest challenge because you have so much uncertainty. Are people going to connect with me? Am I going to be good at running my own business? Why was marketing never a class in any psychology program? These are the thoughts that go through your head. I hope to learn the best ways to connect to my community so that people have the necessary resources. Learning all you can do to connect others to the proper help for relief is a learning process. I am still growing every day.
We’ve been impressed with Revivify Therapeutics, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I provide therapy for trauma, self-esteem, and relationships in San Antonio and throughout Texas. I specialize in helping people overcome emotional barriers holding them back from their desire to connect to the people around them. I do so by providing therapy for individuals and couples so that they can find fulfillment in their relationships. I get it because I have a decade dedicated to working with people who experience trauma. I’ve lived in war-torn countries, worked extensively with U.S Military veterans, and have worked with those who suffered sexual assaults from a person they trusted. I know that sometimes it is easier to put your head down and push through to the day’s end. So when we work together, you won’t just get a trained therapist. You’ll get someone who truly understands what you’re going through.
We love to hear about your fond memories of growing up.
I grew up around Washington, D.C. One day my mother got a flat tire in the city with my younger brother in the back of the car and me. As any Mom can imagine having two children under the age of 9 with you is hard enough, let alone waiting for a tow truck to show up. Not like she had YouTube and an iPad as backup, so like any good teacher-mom, she had books. My mother read to us, like she did most nights, and would always put on the best character voices. She bought us street food, and I got to escape from a violin lesson!
