Community Highlights: Meet Lesley Smith of Usawa Wellness Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesley Smith.

Hi Lesley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My career in counseling started in 2003 after graduating with BA in Psychology. I then moved to San Antonio and began working within the foster/adoptive care system in 2007. I later obtained my Master’s Degree from Webster University in 2012. After completing my internship for my LPC, I stayed with Bexar County Juvenile Probation until 2016. In 2017, I left the county and started my own solo practice, Usawa Wellness Services, to meet the needs of Black families in San Antonio. I soon found that the need for mental health services to Black individuals and families was far greater than I could accomplish on my own, so in 2019, I changed my practice from a solo to a group practice and began hiring. Usawa, then became one of the few Black, Veteran and Woman owned private practices in the San Antonio area.

In December 2019 we moved into a 5 office suite in Live Oak ready to serve on a larger scale and in March 2020, Covid happened. Covid did not derail our growth though. We kept hiring and doubled in size as we were now able to offer services remotely and reach a larger community throughout Texas. As the pandemic marched on so did we, We began going back in office in June 2020 with careful precautions in place. In February 2021, we were affected by the freeze and our pipes burst above our office. Well, this provided us the opportunity to expand from a 5 office suite to a 7 office suite and an additional space for yoga instruction.

In 2021 we continued to serve through our expansion and to end 2021 on a bang we opened up our satellite location off of 410 and Callaghan. 2022 we continue to expand and grow and diversify our services. We have established agreements with area universities to become a training site for mental health professionals from Masters to Advanced placements and have incorporated dietetic services along with yoga instruction.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I would not say the road has been smooth, but I have welcomed the struggles that have arrived at each point. I liken myself to a ‘transformational visionary’ at the end of the day and struggles only present opportunities for growth.

As you know, we’re big fans of Usawa Wellness Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
