Today we’d like to introduce you to Yona Shaw.
Hi Yona, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in 2013 as a makeup artist specializing in bridal makeup, because of the nature of the job I had the opportunity of working closely with many photographers and found myself becoming very interested in and curious about the art of photography.
In 2015, I bought my first professional camera and started training as a photographer I have been working since as a portrait and wedding photographer in central Texas and surrounding areas.
In 2020, during the pandemic with most freelance jobs slowing down, I picked up videography and I have started my videography journey since then as well alongside makeup and photography.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I was led so far has been a smooth sailing journey for the most part.
Picking up the knowledge and practicals have been an organic process as I am deeply passionate about the art of creation in the visual formats that I have chosen, which combined with serving people gives me a sense of purpose and satisfaction that is unmatched by anything else I have ever tried.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a makeup artist, photographer, and videographer specializing in bridal wedding makeup, photography, and videography serving clients in Austin, Texas, and surrounding areas.
I’d like to say I am a one-stop service provider, and having the opportunity to work multiple jobs that are related gives me the knowledge to know how they work together well.
For example, as a makeup artist, I know exactly how the makeup’s end result would show up on the camera/video and this provides me with the knowledge to apply the colors and coverage to match the style my clients are looking for.
Having a photography background helps me in videography with composition, lighting and framing the shots, etc.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned is to trust myself, my journey has taught me to be confident in my abilities to serve my customers to the best of my abilities and deliver their vision into reality.
