Today we’d like to introduce you to Catya Smit & Brittney Buchanan
Catya & Brittney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Deux Mamas are two best friends who have been inseparable since 8th grade, and our journey into baking is a testament to the power of friendship and passion. Both of us, now proud mamas, discovered an outlet that allowed our creativity to flow and our love for baking to grow. After baking countless loaves of sourdough for family and friends, perfecting our craft and sharing our passion along the way, Deux Mamas was born. What started as a simple hobby has now blossomed into a full-fledged business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Baking sourdough bread is definitely not a quick fix—it’s a process. The time and attention required to create a perfect loaf can be a challenge, especially for us as wives, moms, and now business owners. People don’t always realize how much goes into it: the long hours of mixing, resting, proofing, and baking, not to mention the ongoing care that the sourdough starter needs.
Balancing the demands of family life with running a business, attending markets/events, weekly orders and keeping up with baking schedules, it can feel like juggling sometimes. But even with the time constraints and the long hours, we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Yes, it’s tough—there are days when it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day—but there’s also something incredibly rewarding about seeing our hard work pay off. Watching our loaves bring joy to people and knowing we’re sharing something wholesome and made with care has made it all worth it. It’s a journey full of challenges, but it’s also a journey full of love, growth, and the kind of fulfillment that only comes from doing what we’re passionate about.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Us Deux Mamas started out simply baking sourdough bread, but as we dove deeper into the world of baking, we discovered something truly incredible: sourdough isn’t just delicious, it’s also incredibly healthy. We learned that for those with gluten intolerance, sourdough can be easier to digest, and for diabetics, it has a lower glycemic index compared to other breads. Sourdough fermentation is also great for gut health, thanks to the natural probiotics that develop during the process. That’s when we realized we weren’t just baking bread—we were offering something that could help people live healthier lives.
As our love for sourdough grew, so did our creativity. We couldn’t just stop at bread! We began experimenting with sourdough-based treats, and now we’ve expanded our menu to include sourdough brown butter chocolate chip cookies (which, by the way, are TO DIE FOR), sourdough flour tortillas, and soft, fluffy sourdough dinner rolls. And there’s more to come! The sky’s the limit when it comes to what we can create with sourdough.
But the heart of our brand isn’t just about the products—it’s about the fun, creative vibe we’ve cultivated. We wanted our loaves to reflect not just the ingredients, but who we are as moms, best friends, and small business owners. That’s why we’ve given our loaves fun, relatable names like Hot Mama (jalapeño & cheddar), Sugar Mama (cinnamon & brown sugar), and Berry Nutty Mama (cranberry & walnut). It’s a playful way to connect with our customers, and we love that it’s become interactive—some of our customers have even come up with their own names and flavors!
Being able to connect with our community in this way has been so fulfilling. It’s a reminder that, at the end of the day, we’re just like them—everyday moms and best friends, sharing what we love and creating something we’re proud of. Our business is as much about the relationships we’ve built as it is about the bread we bake, and that’s something we truly treasure.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We absolutely love connecting with our San Antonio and Boerne community, and we’re always looking for new ways to collaborate and spread the word about the power of healthy foods. Our mission is to make wholesome, preservative-free bread and baked goods accessible to as many families as possible. We believe in supporting small businesses, especially in the food world, where so much heart and hard work goes into every product.
Spread the Word: One of the best ways to support us is by telling others about our business. Whether it’s a friend, a neighbor, or a local restaurant, word-of-mouth is everything.
Follow Us on Social Media: Stay connected with us on Instagram and Facebook! We post updates on new flavors, markets, and fun behind-the-scenes moments. It’s also a great way to engage with us and share your thoughts on our products.
Come Visit Us: Find us at local farmers’ markets in San Antonio and Boerne. We love meeting new customers, answering questions, and hearing what you think about our loaves. Your feedback helps us grow and continue to improve.
Collaborate with Us: We’re always open to collaborating with other local businesses, whether it’s creating a special loaf for a community event or partnering with other food artisans. If you have an idea, we’d love to hear it!
Support Small and Local: At the end of the day, supporting small businesses is the heart of what we do. Every purchase helps us continue to create, grow, and share the joy of sourdough with our community. So, whether you’re grabbing a loaf of Hot Mama or some cookies, you’re not just supporting us—you’re supporting a local business that’s passionate about what they do.
