Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Sandoval
Hi Juan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my start in the construction industry when my parents were having a hard time finding good contractors for a home they were purchasing. Even though I had very little construction experience or tools, I was slowly able to transform that house into a nice, comfortable home. I found myself enjoying the process so much that I found a technical college in my area and went through their homebuilding program. I had some excellent mentors in that program that showed me how to do things the right way. I did an internship with Habitat For Humanity and stayed on for a year after graduating. I then landed a job with the San Antonio Museum of Art as a carpenter on the Exhibits Team. I really enjoyed the challenge of working on massive projects and working with people from all over the world. My experience at SAMA really forged my mindset about quality craftsmanship, efficiency, and team work. I also began contracting myself out to other art organizations, schools and museums to earn extra income and soon was hired on by one of the directors to work on her personal home. From there Sandoval Home Services was born. I found a niche working for homeowners that wanted quality workmanship for custom projects, but did not want to hire a large contracting firm. When CoVid hit and people started working from home, things really took off for Sandoval Home Services. After the pandemic subsided, I began taking on commercial carpentry work to build my skillset. I now have a healthy mix of both commercial and residential customers that keep me busy year round. My end goal is to return to the program where I started and teach the next generation of builders.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with any business, there are ups and downs. At first, I struggled with the business end of things, but after getting set up properly and setting up systems and processes, things moved much smoother.
As the years went by, I found which types of projects were a good fit for me. Building a customer base was another of my other struggles. I tried different methods until I found a good combination that allowed me to find which customers were a good fit for my services.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The Jock Willink podcast, as well as some of his books, have been key to helping me develop discipline and communication skills that have served me well in life and business, I also listen to the How I Built This podcast hosted by Guy Raz. I really enjoy hearing how successful brands and businesses have been built from scratch. On the technical side, I keep up to date on construction trends, methods and materials by subscribing to industry publications and attending workshops. Instagram has also been extremely helpful to communicate and view the work of others that I admire.
