Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess And Katiebeth Brandt
Hi Jess and Katiebeth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We started Tandem Canines Training Company in the spring of 2021 as a means to cover rent and bills as we get reacquainted with the city. We are both from San Antonio, graduating from high schools in the NISD and SAISD districts, but each moved away for different periods of time. It wasn’t until we connected in Fredericksburg and had the opportunity to move to San Antonio that we started Tandem Canines.
Jess has been training dogs since 2012 and has mentors that were military handlers , detection handlers and veterinarian behaviorist and trainers. . Developing her own unique style Jess has worked with a number of cases deemed by other trainers as “lost causes” and has brought them peace and happiness within their family. In the past year or so we’ve put a lot of energy into developing our service dog training program which we’ve seen a lot of success in. All our handlers and canines are working so well together and we’re seeing all the hard work start to pay off.
In August of 2024, we saw the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to purchase an established boarding kennel, training field, and a home on the property. This expansion means we can now offer more than just training— we are taking on boarding and even grooming services! We owe so much to the incredible people who helped make this possible. First, to Rene at Top Dog Training Center, who trusted us to carry on the work she’s put into this place for the last 18 years. Our families, for their unwavering support and faith in us to take on this huge project. And of course, to our amazing clients—for giving us grace while we made the transition.
Where we are today is continuing to build our facility in opportunities and reputation as a premier boarding facility and hub for sports dog families and other working jobs for their canines. Our work is our life and we spend each day making the most out of it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a bumpy road, to say the least. The first year our two shepherds passed away two weeks a part, one from plant poisoning and the other from cancer. They were both too young and we weren’t prepared to lose them. Being our pack leaders, demo dogs, and one a personal service dog, it was a blow that we had to recalibrate from.
2024 has been the greatest struggle yet, starting the year off Katiebeth was in and out of the hospital for the first 6 weeks of the year and has been balancing out new diagnoses while working full time. In March, Jess was robbed at gunpoint and shaken to her core. It disrupted our entire lives and reevaluated what our lives were. Right along then the facility came up and we have had a chance at a better life again.
Through all of this we’ve made the most out of what comes at us and we are so thankful for the community of dog people, from clients turned friends, to other trainers, and family that has come together to rally with us for each season of life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tandem Canines Training Company and Pet Resort?
We are a woman owned and woman lead small business that Focuses on much needed niches of the dog community here in San Antonio. Our work has us focusing on services dog for military vets, and medical/mental health conditions. Each dog is chosen by Jess for best breed/type match for each person and needs. From there it’s two years of working closely to raise and train your canine to be able to work at full capacity in your day to day life. Our program is unique in how we approach the training, how we involve our clients through out the training, and all the challenges that arise through out the time working together. We accept anyone willing to put in the work to raise and train a service dog, and we keep our prices accessible with a down payment and monthly payments over the course of the two years.
Another aspect of our training is protection and sports training. We host highly skilled and knowledgeable professionals to work with our canines one on one each week. We have past clients that we trained for obedience coming out and participating in the weekly events as a fun way to engage their dog, and I have never seen happier canines.
Both Service dog and protection training take a high level of connection, communication, and trust between the handler and canine, and we are hear to build and guide that partnership. Being a small business we are invested in every part of the training.
The same level of dedication goes into the dog boarding and grooming. We have the best staff in the area that all care for the dogs that are here and get to know the quirks and personalities of each dog. Our groomers have been in the industry for over 40 years combined and take pride in their work. Each dog has our full attention when working with them, whether its boarding, grooming, or training. This is more than a business to us, it’s our heart.

- Boarding: Ranges form $45-65 a night with Multipet discounts, extended stay discounts, referral discounts, first time discounts, We want to get people to know us as the new owners and to give us a shot. We are the lowest priced in the area with the most to offer
