Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Rodriguez
Briana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My family and I are native to the Westside of San Antonio, Texas. Music has always been a huge part of my life, whether I was dancing, singing, or performing at family gatherings. Each member of my family introduced me to different genres: my Grampa passed on his love for soul and disco, my Grama shared cumbia, tejano, and that classic Westside sound like the Royal Jesters, my mom brought in 80’s new wave and 90’s R&B, my tia added 80’s pop and R&B, and my eldest cousin got me into reggae. I was lucky to grow up with such a broad musical influence, and it shaped who I am today.
In 5th grade, I started playing the viola, then switched to percussion in 6th grade and played all the way through high school. Music was always my focus, but it wasn’t until 2022 that I built up the confidence to dive into DJing. That leap pushed me to pursue music business and audio production at SAC, which I’ve started in the fall of 2024. It’s been a long journey, but everything in my life has led me here.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is definitely not linear, and I’ve faced my share of struggles. Like I mentioned earlier, I didn’t always have the confidence to put myself out there or even believe I was good enough to start. A big turning point was when I had my son in 2017. As a single mom with an infant, you have to make sacrifices, and for a while, my main focus was on taking care of him. Pursuing my dreams took a backseat.
Thankfully, I have an incredibly supportive family, especially my grandparents. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to go back to school full-time or chase after my passion. I know how blessed we are to have that support system, and I’m grateful every day for it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I go by BittyScorp, but honestly, I prefer people call me Bitty. It just feels way more fun than my government name, no particular reason behind it! I’m a vinyl DJ, though I’ve started learning digital formats recently. Still, vinyl is my first love. There’s just something about physically holding a record, cueing up the song, and that thrill of digging through crates and finding the exact album you’ve been hunting for. I DJ because I love all kinds of music, and nothing makes me happier than seeing people dance along and enjoy themselves.
I’m also part of a girl duo called @HandfulStereo with my partner in crime, @DaniGalTX. People tend to know me for my passion for music. I host an event called Ragga Cumbia Nites at Tony’s Siesta, and we’ve had two installments so far. The purpose behind it is to unify Black and Brown communities and highlight the pioneers of the music we all love—reggae and cumbia. It’s so important to me to give credit to the Black community for their influence, because without them, we wouldn’t have these genres. That’s what really sets my work apart—making sure the roots and the culture behind the music are always front and center.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Be kind, stay thankful, and network! Building genuine connections is everything in this industry. It’s also crucial to stand firm on your boundaries and your rates; knowing your worth is key. And of course, practice! Keep honing in on your craft. No matter what setbacks or negativity you face, don’t let it get you down. KEEP GOING! The sky is the limit.
