Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena O’gwin Miranda
Hi Serena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been shaped by family, particularly my grandmother, Irene Medina, who lived to be 101 and was the true matriarch and entrepreneur of our family. Her resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, along with the strength of my mother, have always been a source of inspiration for me. My father, who was always supportive, encouraged me to chase my dreams, which led me to where I am today.
I pursued my education with a strong focus on Interdisciplinary Studies, earning my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio. This academic foundation equipped me with the knowledge and skills to start my career as an educator, driven by a passion for teaching and empowering others. Over time, I realized that I could extend this passion beyond the classroom by educating small business owners and families about the importance of securing their lives. This shift led me to become an Insurance Broker, where I specialize in helping small business owners and their families with their insurance needs.
My focus is not just on providing insurance but on ensuring my clients are informed and feel confident in their decisions. I believe in a customer-centric approach, where each client is treated with the care and professionalism they deserve. My journey is a blend of my roots in education and my commitment to protecting what matters most to my clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has certainly had its share of challenges. One of the most difficult periods was during the 2008 financial crash. At the time, my husband was a mortgage broker, and when the crash hit, we were faced with the uncertainty of how to support our family. I had been a stay-at-home mom to our three children, but with the economic downturn, I knew I had to step back into the workforce.
Returning to teaching after five years away from the classroom was incredibly difficult, but my husband, Ron Miranda, truly helped lessen the sting of going back to work. His unwavering support and strength during such a challenging time were invaluable. Even though the financial strain from the 2008 crash was heavy, Ron always stood by my side, reassuring me that we would get through it together. He was not only a pillar of strength for me but also a nurturing father to our children, stepping in to care for them in ways that helped ease my transition back to the workforce. His presence made it possible for me to focus on my career again, knowing that our children were in the best hands, and for that, I’ll always be grateful.
But you do what you have to do for your family. Going back to teaching was the best decision we could have made because it provided the financial stability we needed during a tough time. It also opened up many doors for us, allowing my husband to restart and focus on his new career in real estate and for us to rebuild as business owners.
The experience taught me the value of resilience and adaptability. It wasn’t easy, but those tough times reinforced the importance of hard work, perseverance, and the willingness to pivot when necessary. In retrospect, while the journey hasn’t always been smooth, each challenge has brought valuable lessons that have shaped who I am today. These experiences have also deepened my commitment to educating and supporting others, whether it’s in the classroom or helping small business owners secure their futures.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What truly makes me happy is spending time with my family building our businesses and growing as business partners. My young adult children are now an integral part of our family business, pursuing their licenses in real estate and insurance. Watching them follow in our entrepreneurial footsteps while carving out their paths fills me with immense pride. They are now traveling, studying languages from Japan to Costa Rica, and preparing to assist clients from all over the world who are relocating to Texas. These experiences are broadening their horizons and shaping them into global professionals. Whether we’re working together, spending downtime with our Frenchie, Gucci, and German Shepard, Jasmine, or enjoying a good glass of wine, the joy of building this life and business as a family is what truly fulfills me.
