Hi LaToya Chenelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a 3rd generation hairstylist, deeply rooted in the legacy of my grandmother’s beauty school. As I observed my mother’s evolution as a stylist and instructor, my lifelong passion for hairstyling blossomed there. Following four years of dedicated service in the military, I dedicated 11 years to an impactful career as a beauty school admission advisor, contributing my expertise to prestigious institutions such as Paul Mitchell and Aveda. Alongside these accomplishments, I proudly earned my Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design. In 2021, the loss of my beloved grandmother marked a pivotal moment that ignited the pursuit of my dreams in beauty school. Choosing the esteemed Ogle San Antonio Campus, I transitioned from advisor to student. Today, in partnership with my sister, I am at the helm of a boutique salon, driven by a mission to ensure our customers leave happier and more confident—continuing the cherished legacy of our grandmother. I have come full circle from my early days learning in my grandmother’s school to orchestrating positive beauty experiences. Eagerly anticipating the continuation of this multidimensional journey, I am committed to delivering one gorgeous transformation at a time.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While my journey has been enriching, it has been challenging. Transitioning from the military to the beauty industry presented its own set of adjustments. Navigating the intricacies of diverse beauty school environments, especially after the loss of my grandmother, brought both emotional and professional challenges. Balancing a demanding career as a beauty school admission advisor while pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design required careful time management and dedication. The pivotal moment in 2021, deciding to pursue my dreams in beauty school, brought its uncertainties and adjustments. Transitioning from an advisory role to being a student was a significant shift. Establishing and running a boutique salon alongside my sister comes with its daily challenges in the competitive beauty industry. Despite these obstacles, each challenge has been a stepping stone, contributing to my growth and the unique path I’ve forged in the beauty world.

As a licensed cosmetologist and makeup artist, my expertise lies in fostering healthy hair through specialized services such as silk press, hair extensions, hair color, and natural hair styling, including crochet braids. I take pride in prioritizing the well-being of my client’s hair. What sets me apart is my technical skills and my commitment to healthy communication. Building strong connections with my clients is an art I cherish, as I aim to uplift their spirits and enhance their beauty. Having a background as a photographer enables me to extend a unique beauty package, capturing the essence of their transformations beyond the salon. I am most proud of creating a holistic beauty experience beyond traditional services, incorporating my skills as a cosmetologist, makeup artist, and photographer. This multifaceted approach distinguishes my work, leaving clients looking beautiful and feeling empowered and confident.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the profound impact of grace, patience, and action, coupled with an openness to learn through continued education. Embracing these principles has fueled my personal growth and has been instrumental in navigating the dynamic landscape of the beauty industry, fostering resilience, and ensuring a commitment to ongoing improvement.
