Hi Dona, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I enjoyed a crown of thick, flowing, and healthy hair until I was diagnosed with Alopecia in 2010. Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that causes one’s immune system to mistakenly attack hair follicles, resulting in, at times, significant hair loss. Research suggests that genetics and environmental (non-genetic) factors, such as hair chemicals, play a role. As a result, I suffered silently for years while searching for a practical and long-term solution. After years of futility, I found a meaningful and lasting solution in the form of a natural, chemical-free lifestyle (SisterLocs) in 2018. SisterLocs are a unique form of small, uniform locks created using a precise parting technique. Characterized by their pencil-sized circumference, SisterLocs offer a neat and well-defined appearance, setting them apart from traditional larger dreadlocks. This intricate hairstyling method provides versatility in styling, allowing clients to express their flair while maintaining a distinctive and elegant look. SisterLocs quickly proved to be a game-changer for me. Within a year of transitioning, I was convinced that there was hope for countless other African American women facing the same situation. I realized women in this situation cannot do anything about their genetics but can change some harmful non-genetic factors. This realization fueled my desire to be part of a generational shift away from harmful hair products and a discontented lifestyle. To fully engage in this movement, I became a Loctician, aiming to share my knowledge and offer women the chance to experience the genuine freedom I now enjoy. I am proud to report that I have helped educate and facilitate the transition of countless women and built a thriving business to boot.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing in life is free of obstacles and challenges; this industry is no exception. Following the COVID-19 era lull, we have realized marked growth and are poised to continue this trajectory in the long term. However, finding trained and capable locticians to join our team and grow the business further remains a hurdle. In addition, the SisterLocs segment of the hair industry remains largely compartmentalized/niche. This is mainly due to a lack of exposure and education in the African American population in the Greater San Antonio area. However, I hope that forums such as this will help spread the word and spark some curiosity as we endeavor to grow this movement, this revolution!
We’ve been impressed with InterTwined Locs, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart? What should we know?
As someone who has personally navigated and profoundly understands the struggle of growing and maintaining healthy and vibrant hair, I have worked tirelessly to establish and grow a thriving business over the past six years. I am dedicated to changing lives by helping every client unlock the secret to gorgeous and healthy Locs through commitment, transparency, professionalism, and uncompromising techniques.
What do you do, what do you specialize in / what are you known for?
We specialize in installing and maintaining SisterLocs. However, we also provide additional services such as palm rolling and briding.
