Meet Mallory Nelson of Floresville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Nelson.

Mallory Nelson

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I began my entrepreneurial journey with 913 Candle Co. in 2022. The inspiration behind my business came from a deeply personal place – the loss of my father to pancreatic cancer in March 2021. Struggling with grief, I took a break from work and school, but it was during this challenging time that I found the strength to start something meaningful. In honor of my dad, whose birthday is September 13th, I founded 913 Candle Co. This business became a tribute to his memory, a way to keep his name alive. The journey has been one of self-discovery and healing. I pour my emotions into crafting scents that evoke memories of my dad and childhood, creating a unique and personal connection with each product. I have been humbled by the positive response from customers who appreciate my company’s authenticity and emotional resonance.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The most challenging part of this has been the constant reminder that I’ve lost my dad. Even my most successful days are bittersweet. Other challenges I’ve faced include the Texas heat that limits the number of markets I can commit to (the heat melts my product) and “normal” challenges that any entrepreneur faces when establishing their own business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in creating hand-poured, clean-burning soy wax candles and melts, and then expanded my product line to include room sprays and car diffusers. I am most proud that I have been able to create a product that doesn’t have harmful effects, like many other waxes used in candle making. People must be aware of what they burn in their homes.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My mom was there to support me from the beginning. To kick off my business, my primary source of sales was at in-person markets – she was there from set-up to tear-down, helping with whatever I may have needed. I also can’t go without crediting my dad- for the work ethic he instilled in me and my siblings at a young age.
