Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Butcher.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my business after giving birth to my first daughter, Evelyn. She was born at the start of COVID-19, and I was having a hard time postpartum adjusting to all the life changes that were happening. I started to look for a creative outlet and stumbled across Polymer Clay on a YouTube video. I hit the ground running from there and officially started my business at the start of 2021. Social media fueled my small business and kept me busy until December 2022, when I had my second daughter, Anna-Marie. I found out my water had broken on 12/12/2023, and I left the hospital to deliver the final packages for the year, packed my hospital bag, and then went back to give birth. 2023 has been a transition year for me; I gave birth, sold our first home, and moved all in a few months. Life has been busy, but after a break, I am trying to step back into my business again and see where it takes me!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Having a small business is never easy! You learn so much along the way and grow and adapt. My biggest challenge is balancing family life and managing a small handmade business solo. People need to realize how much goes into the background of a small business. You’re a social media manager, photographer, maker, and more, all on top of your everyday duties at home, and it can sometimes become quite overwhelming. I love what I do, and it keeps me pushing on even when self-doubt can creep in.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I specialize in handmade wearable art made from Polymer Clay. I mostly make earrings, but I have been expanding into necklaces and other forms of jewelry as well. I try not to box myself in with earrings, but I constantly shift my focus there unintentionally. I’m known to most people as “the girl who makes earrings,” haha. I’m most proud of how far my small business has grown, knowing that anything is possible with hard work. It’s also gratifying as a mother to show my daughters that with enough effort and motivation, they can achieve their dreams as well. The jewelry I create is unique and one-of-a-kind pieces of art that you could only find from me. I try hard to create designs that resonate with who I am and can’t be found anywhere else!
Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
God has so richly blessed me in so many ways. From my husband and our beautiful family to my small business, God has had his hand over me, and I truly give all the glory to him! I can’t help but smile when I think of the blessings poured over my life over the years.
