Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsten Burandt.
Hi Kirsten, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a dance teacher for over 20 years and a dance educator in public schools for HS/MS for 13 years. My dream/life goal has always been to own my dance studio/performing arts institution. Dance has been in my life since I began at 2 years old. A funny story to go along with that is that my mother lied and said I was 3 to get me into classes because I was dancing around everywhere! It has been my life’s work to grow as a dancer and as a teacher to provide the best opportunities for my students. There was no summer I took off from training or learning, nor do I take off summers now either. I danced throughout my childhood, then went on to dance and teach in college. Performing arts has always been a passion of mine. Growing up, I was involved in choir and musical theatre programs. I was eventually asked to be a singer in my dad’s 12-piece band that performed at conventions throughout different cities and states. I was in my dad’s band as a choreographer /vocalist /celebrity impersonator for 18 years until he passed in 2013. That is the day the music died. I miss being on stage with him and the band so much! I decided to implement music /musical theatre into my studio. We also offer voice /acting lessons as part of our performing arts classes and all genres: tap, jazz, ballet, Folklorico, hip hop, musical theatre, and a wonderful early childhood program starting at 18 months old – adults. Leaving public education after 13 years to embark on this journey was the biggest risk, but in the 2 years I’ve been in business, it’s been the greatest reward!
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I mentioned before, leaving public education was a huge risk. Still, I’ve created a wonderful history and longevity of my name through my teaching, and I have a great rapport with the community and students. It is hard to discover a new business, so constantly recruiting and advertising is always a challenge. October 2023 made 2 years that I have been open, so I’m doing well, but I hope for growth and acknowledgment that I have a wonderful outlet for the youth to discover their passion through dance and music.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I provide a safe, warm, nurturing, and encouraging culture for students to learn about dance/movement and singing in a non-competitive environment. I take great pride in my curriculum and class management for each class level; I’m well known for being an amazing teacher and a great communicator and for my passion for what I do. My favorite quote is, “When you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am a member of professional organizations where I continue to train to bring the best to my students. I am a tap examiner for the Texas Association Teachers of Dancing Inc. I’m also a member of TDEA ( Texas Dance Educators Association). I also attend Dance Teacher Web for continued education during the summer.
