Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacey Rodriguez.
Hi, Lacey. I’m so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started drawing when I was little. I was inspired by the books I read and wanted to bring the characters I envisioned to life on paper. It was a long journey! No one is just born with the talent to draw. I had to create many bad art to get to where I am today.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. As I said, no one is just born with talent. I had to study a lot and make a lot of errors. I got critiqued a lot when I was little. It hurt, but it was necessary. I started posting online, and though I did get a lot of excellent feedback, it also led me to other artists and their work. It was hard not to compare myself to them–to feel like I was so far behind compared to everyone else.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m known for my character portrait illustrations. I specialize in a painted style with brush strokes that mimic traditional art. I capture a character’s personality in each portrait I do! I’ve painted characters from popular franchises and do commissions to bring others’ characters to life. I love playing with color! I’m most proud of this year–2023. I’ve traveled all over the US selling my work. I’ve gotten to meet so many wonderful and exciting people!
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you will have bad days when you create ugly art. The creative process is never going to be linear. No matter how much you study, how many tutorials you watch, and how many years you have, you will make mistakes. You’re going to mess up. You’re going to hate some of the things you draw! But it makes those times when things come together all the more rewarding and beautiful.
