Daily Inspiration: Meet Rukey Styles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rukey Styles.

Rukey Styles

Hi Rukey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing hair as a teenager in high school, practicing on family members and myself. I started cosmetology school 2 days after graduating high school. I participated in hair competitions during my cosmetology and early career. I styled for photo shoots that led to music videos. I studied and provided nonsurgical hair restoration services (wigs and toupees to restore the self-image of those suffering from alopecia). This skill allowed me to do theater work which eventually landed me in TV and film.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Things could have been smoother. I was a teenager, mother, and young adult. People saw something in me that I did not see myself. Yet I ended up here anyway. A cosmetology teacher at Pivot Point, Ms. Charlotte, told me I would work on TV and film. I didn’t see it because I hadn’t seen an example. So I did not desire it. I needed to mature as any young adult.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hair department head for TV and film. I curate the hair looks for the characters based on the script and conversations with the writers, producers, and directors. I’m most proud of things the viewers can’t see. The stuff in the trailer makes things happen smoothly on set/camera. I look at it as puzzle pieces. We all have a part in the bigger picture. What do we need to do to make this piece fit/happen? I pride myself on making something out of nothing and having multiple options to get something done in my mind, in my pocket, and up my sleeve. Hairgyver (MacGyver) One of my colleagues calls me the mad scientist. Lol

What makes you happy?
Sharing information, teaching, and watching someone apply the techniques I’ve shared, or witnessing the Aha moment when the “why we do this” connects. I love it! I know that they will take it, master it, and build on it. This knowledge will set them apart and show monetarily. I love seeing people grow.
