Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Orona.
Hi Olivia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Tejanas in Media is on a mission to pave the way to connect Women in Media to Women-owned businesses. I found a need to highlight women more in the creative media space when I joined the SA Creatives team. SA Creatives is a community of photographers and models who meet monthly to create content and grow in their craft. It became apparent that Men dominated the media space, and women seemed to shy away from joining due to this. I wanted to create a space where women could grow together where they can, learn from each other, and feel comfortable. I also wanted to give women more opportunities to land gigs in their craft. We want to bring photographers, videographers, Writers, and social media influencers to women-owned businesses to collaborate on projects or business needs. Tejanas in media started by doing meet-ups at local businesses and holding contests for Product photos and media videos (examples – Reels or TikToks). We have also been able to offer media services at events in our community. We are expanding by having networking mixers soon to connect business owners with our community on a larger scale.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
So far, our challenges have been scaling faster to show people we exist. We have succeeded with the businesses we have worked with, supporting us and understanding our mission. We hope to gain a bigger following so the scale of our events is on a larger level. We have had great success with women-owned businesses joining and following our mission; we need more creative women to join. Let women in our industry join us and let them know we exist is important to us right now because we have the businesses.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I left a career in the corporate world to follow my dreams as a creative. I am now a full-time photographer. I joined SA Creatives as their Creative business manager to help create events for our community—that’s where I grew in my photography craft. I was then inspired to create my own community/business, Tejanas, in media. Now I am the Director of creativity and Founder of Tejanas in Media. I wanted to give women a platform to grow.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that San Antonio has so much culture and community. There is always something going on that you can join and be a part of. Depending on what you like to do, you can join a group here. There is nothing I don’t like about San Antonio.
