I’m Digna Diaz, and my love affair with photography began during my sophomore year in high school. It was as if a spark had been ignited within me, and I quickly realized that this was more than just a passing interest—it was my true calling.
As I immersed myself in the craft, I discovered my natural talent for capturing moments and fell head over heels in love with the art form. The school’s newspaper staff recognized my developing skills and entrusted me with the role of editor-in-chief. From that moment on, I became a fixture at every event, eagerly snapping away to capture the essence of the occasion.
Time flew by, and before I knew it, I was a sophomore in college, ready to embark on my professional photography journey. However, one major hurdle stood in my way—finding the perfect name and aesthetic for my budding business. It was a challenge that kept me for countless nights, but I refused to settle for anything less than extraordinary.
Then, in a moment of pure inspiration, it hit me—photography by Obscura. The name encompassed my unique vision and encapsulated my fascination with light and shadow. With a name that resonated deeply, I was ready to bring my photography dreams to life.
Setting out to establish my portfolio, I delved into various genres of photography, refusing to confine myself to a single niche. Graduation photos, sports events, the wonders of nature, delectable food spreads—you name it, I captured it. An entire world of beauty was waiting to be immortalized through my lens, and I was determined to explore it all. Word quickly spread about Photography by Obscura, and I soon captured the most precious moments in people’s lives. I poured my heart and soul into every image, striving to tell compelling stories through my photographs. It was a surreal experience to witness the joy and emotion that my work evoked in others. I knew I had found my purpose.
As my business flourished, I became known for my ability to transform any event into a visual masterpiece. The incredible diversity of my work took me to breathtaking landscapes, vibrant city streets, and intimate gatherings. Each experience pushed me to grow as an artist, fueling my passion and nurturing my creativity.
Yet, amidst the growing success, I always kept sight of the magic that initially drew me to photography. My clients appreciated my warm and approachable nature, allowing them to feel comfortable and relaxed in front of my camera, resulting in photographs that reflected their true selves. Throughout my photography journey, I’ve encountered many obstacles, each presenting an opportunity for growth and learning. One of my biggest challenges was promoting myself and my work authentically. In a world saturated with countless photographers, finding a way to stand out and make my voice heard was crucial.
I realized that self-promotion went beyond simply showcasing my photographs; it was about telling my unique story and connecting with people on a deeper level. I poured my heart into building an online presence that reflected my passion, style, and dedication. Through captivating visuals, heartfelt captions, and genuine interactions with my audience, I aimed to build a community of like-minded individuals who resonated with my work. It was disheartening to encounter individuals who needed to fully grasp the expertise, time, and investment required to create exceptional images. However, I soon discovered another obstacle—a widespread misconception that photography is an effortless skill anyone can master. This belief often led to undervaluing the craft and reluctance to pay the fees associated with professional photography.
To overcome this challenge, I proactively educated others about the true value of professional photography. I engaged in open conversations, sharing my knowledge and experiences to shed light on the intricacies of the art form. I am Digna Diaz, a resilient and determined student at The University of Texas at San Antonio. As I prepare to graduate on May 20, 2023, with a Bachelor’s in Arts in Communication and a concentration in Public Relations, I reflect on the transformative journey that led me to this milestone.
Originally hailing from Coleman, Texas, my decision to pursue higher education brought me to the vibrant city of San Antonio. Leaving behind the comfort of my hometown, I embraced the opportunities that awaited me at college, knowing that this was the path to realizing my dreams. Throughout my college journey, I have poured my heart and soul into my studies, tirelessly working to develop a portfolio and acquire the necessary skills to kickstart my career in Public Relations. I immersed myself in coursework, internships, and extracurricular activities, honing my ability to craft compelling narratives, build meaningful relationships, and navigate the ever-evolving communication landscape.
But my proudest accomplishment lies not only in my academic achievements but also in my resilience in the face of adversity. Despite experiencing estrangement from both of my parents and lacking financial support, I refused to let these challenges define me or hinder my pursuit of education. Instead, I channeled my strength and determination into supporting myself and forging my path toward success. I worked tirelessly, taking on part-time jobs and scholarships and embracing any opportunity that came my way. Each obstacle became an opportunity for growth, fueling my determination to overcome adversity and prove that I could thrive despite the odds stacked against me.
The journey has been difficult, but it has been worth every moment of sacrifice and perseverance. I have grown personally and professionally, gaining a profound sense of independence, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the power of education.

The profound lesson that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught me is a humbling realization of our human fragility and the transient nature of life itself. In the face of this global crisis, the world stood still, and we collectively experienced the profound truth that we are mere specks in the vastness of the universe, vulnerable to forces beyond our control. As the pandemic swept across continents, it shattered the illusion of invincibility that we often hold. It reminded us that regardless of our accomplishments, titles, or possessions, we are all united in our vulnerability as human beings. The virus showed no bias, sparing anyone regardless of age, race, or social status. It humbled us, reminding us that our existence is delicate, our health fragile, and our time on this Earth limited.
