Hi Dona, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started this journey approximately five years ago because I wanted to experience what African Americans considered and promoted as hair freedom. This freedom included stepping away from the traditional harsh chemical products and techniques which destroyed our hair for generations. Too long have African Americans clung to shallow and misguided standards of hair beauty, a paradigm that has been detrimental to our true essence. Years of perming, stress, and unhealthy styling left me with thinning and damaged hair, and I was desperate for something new, different, and natural. After considerable research, I settled on Sisterlocks. This journey is freeing me from unproductive daily routines and products and helping me realize a life of healthy hair, versatility, and convenience. The years following this transition left me convinced there was hope for countless other African Americans who found themselves in the same conundrum as me. This epiphany left me wanting. It left me wanting to be part of this movement, this generational shift away from an untenable lifestyle of perpetual harm and discontentment. With that, I decided to fully immerse myself in this movement and become a Loctician to share my knowledge and allow women to realize true freedom—the freedom I now enjoy. Over the last five years, I have become an experienced Loctician who has personally navigated and profoundly understands the struggle of growing and maintaining healthy and vibrant hair. Now, I am dedicated to changing this paradigm mentioned above by helping every client unlock the secret to gorgeous and healthy Locs through commitment, transparency, professionalism, and uncompromising techniques. In addition, I have worked tirelessly to build an exceptional client base and culture which boosts self-confidence and, most importantly, unlocks the untainted beauty within our community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
The journey has not been free from obstacles and setbacks. Most notably, in 2020, COVID-19 brought everything to a halt. The government-imposed shutdowns, restrictions, and mandates for social distances resulted in significant setbacks and forced me to reimagine my business model. During this period, my clients suffered from hair slippage and bunching. However, I worked diligently to provide my clients practical guidance on ensuring their hair remained healthy by offering information on online classes and virtual one-on-one sessions.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Our vision is to become the #1 all-natural salon in the San Antonio Area, with the area and state recognition as a leader in the industry. To realize this vision, we seek to grow our client base in our area in the coming years by educating and enriching the lifestyle of those in the African American community seeking beautiful, natural, and chemical-free hair services and products.
