Conversations with Natalie Luevano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Luevano.

Hi Natalie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is Natalie, and my story began when I started college. In my first semester, I found out I was pregnant, and I knew I had to keep going even if it got hard. I tried to seek guidance from advisors, but I was shot down. I had asked for advice on what classes I should take in my second semester as I was due in the middle of the spring semester. The advisor said, “I don’t think you should do school. It’s going to be hard” when that hadn’t even crossed my mind, I had no intention of not continuing my education. I knew that what I was going to school for at the time wouldn’t make me happy I was settling because I had a baby on the way and knew I had to get my act together fast. I started to seek help elsewhere and started talking to old teachers. That’s when I got asked the million-dollar question, “what do you like to do” I replied, “Well, I like skincare,” and the teacher said, “Why don’t you look into becoming an esthetician? At the time, I hadn’t even heard of the esthetician, so I had no clue what she was talking about and started my research.

I began getting into the esthetician program at Alamo College. The program was about a year or so, and flying by, it was so much fun I knew this was going to be my passion; as I entered my last semester, I found out I was pregnant, so not only did I start college pregnant I’m now in my final year of college with a toddler and pregnant again but that gave me even more motivation to finish strong. After an interview, I get into the program.

I was due in the spring again, and that’s also when I was finishing school. I remember talking to my teacher, and she mentioned that I would have to redo the semester because I would have to miss 6 weeks, and I said no, ma’am, I’m missing one week and coming back. I had a game plan I was due the week before spring break, so I was going to miss that week, then go on spring break and come back, but life had other plans, and we got the announcement that we were going to be off an extra week because of COVID 19.

I finished college as a first generation and got my associate’s degree that semester but online during a pandemic with a newborn and toddler. It was time to get my license, but the process was delayed because testing centers were closed the whole summer because of the pandemic. When they finally opened, spots were limited and would get booked fast. I finally passed my test and became a licensed esthetician. I started my small business in the middle of the pandemic. This was hard for many small businesses, but I knew that even if I wasn’t booked and busy right off the bat, slow and steady wins the race. I am now 2 years into having my small business, and it has been so rewarding. I am my boss, and I love what I do. I love empowering women and spreading body positivity; it’s my passion to preach self-love and normalize treating yourself because, like I always say, if you don’t take care of yourself, who will?

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road. One of the main struggles was that I started my business during a pandemic. I had to gain clientele when people needed clarification on whether to go out.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed esthetician specializing in full-body waxing. I’m known for doing Brazilian waxing, but I also offer custom facials. I’m most proud to be a part of normalizing different bodies and spreading body positivity. What sets me apart is I’m in a judgment-free zone. My treatment room is a safe space.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I want everyone to know that they can do it! You can accomplish your goals no matter what.
