Conversations with Hilda Lamas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilda Lamas.

Hi Hilda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up singing in church with my mom and sisters in my hometown of Aransas Pass, TX. I always knew that I wanted to sing since, as far back as I can remember singing is what moved me. I remember singing along to my favorite songs in the living room with a hairbrush and a broken microphone and pretending I was on stage in front of a crowd. My high school years were awkward and rough, and singing became my outlet. I started singing our national anthem at sporting events and my high school graduation. I have released several singles and albums and have opened and shared the stage with some amazing talent. Most recently, I was on tour as a background vocalist for Adassa (the voice of Dolores Madrigal in Disney’s Encanto). It was a summer of music, and we made some great memories. My new single dropped a few weeks ago, and my music video dropped today for “Amor Condicional.” I am excited to see what 2023 has in store for me.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been everything but smooth. I wouldn’t change a thing. My struggles have shaped me into the person and artist I am today. If it were sunshine all the time, the flowers in my garden would dry up. We need the rain to keep everything balanced and growing. My biggest obstacle has been my weight. Doors have been shut in my face, and I have been picked on because of my weight. Once I learned to be comfortable in my skin, no matter my size, things started to change.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I specialize in music that makes you feel. I have been blessed to record music I feel and believe in, regardless of the genre. I have blues, soul, r&b, country, Tejano, and international recordings. I don’t fit in a box per se, and I like that. I have fought hard to be accepted into different genres and not put a label on myself. I am most proud of myself for never giving up. There have been so many moments where I have wanted to for various reasons, but I am a fighter and keep going. I don’t want to quit before the miracle happens.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
It is a combination of characteristics that is most important to my success. I love to see other people succeed. When one does well, we all do well. We can all learn something from one another. If we motivate each other to be better and help bring out the best in one another, the magic that happens is amazing. This takes heart, genuineness, and love, to name a few.
