Rising Stars: Meet Kimmie Simpson of New Braunfels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimmie Simpson.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I graduated from culinary school in 2011 at the Art Institute of Houston. I jumped around different bakeries on the East Coast, learning from amazing and experienced decorators, until finding roots in Lubbock, Texas, where I was in an amazing bakery for nearly 5 years. I went from being just a cake decorator to the head decorator and manager, and I even started my class teaching journey. After suddenly losing my uncle, I took a step back from everything and decided I wanted to live more and work less, so I started traveling. After 3 years, I moved closer to home and made New Braunfels my “Home Sweet Home.” Nothing worth having is obtained easily. There have been many difficult decisions along the road, but each one has come with a lesson. If you look for the silver lining, you can always reflect on the hardest times and know it was worth it. Today we are stronger than ever and will turn 3 years old this January 2023, which is truly exciting. We do everything from custom orders on cakes, cookies, and macarons to large events in the wedding industry. We will be expanding into more weddings in our 3rd year. And we also offer cookie and cake decorating classes and private classes from big corporate events to a fun girl’s night away from responsibilities!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We’ve seen our sides of struggle – I launched emerald Whisk Studio in January of 2020 and had no clue of the longevity of what was coming! After some reorganization and talking with my amazing mentor and support system, I created a path for emerald Whisk to be a successful and well-known brand. I took the “given time” off to center my focus on what I wanted and who I wanted to be in this world. My dad always told me, “You can spend the time crying about it, or you can spend that time fixing it!” That is something I do to this day I live by. Thanks to Murphy’s Law, things do not and will not always go your “planned” way.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Emerald Whisk Studio is a custom studio that offers orders in unique ways. I love being creative with orders rather than copying someone else’s work, from cakes and cookies to macarons and cannolis. I will make anything I can to achieve a client’s dream. If you dream of it, I’ll make it from the boldness and elegance of a wedding to the crazy whimsical creations of a groom’s cake and all the magical events that happen between and after. We have expanded our brand and started teaching cookie and cake decorating classes! I wanted to teach all the Instagram & TikTok “scrollers” how to create the things they saw on the screen. I love seeing my student’s reactions to creating their works of art (that they can eat) and seeing them take intangible objects seen on their screens and making them tangible. Like a good recipe, many ingredients and steps are needed to make edible creations. I’m the artist that helps you learn and perfect that recipe, and we also drink wine!

What matters most to you? Why?
The biggest takeaway I want the world to know is to “STAY TRUE!” Stay true to yourself and what you believe in! I have created my success by being my most authentic self. I stumble over my words; I have good days and bad but at the end of the day. I am human. Creating relationships with my clients and not just calling them “customers” solidifies they are the most important thing to your success. And, of course, having amazing and supportive friends and family alongside you, mine have been with me since the beginning. I would love to highlight my Momma Bear; she helped me through culinary school when I had to type up recipes and cost forms for my Capstone Final. And she has been there through countless phone calls, even to be the soundboard for new ideas, struggles, and celebrations. Love you more than Chocolate Chip Cookies, Momma!
