Meet Kaitlyn Johnston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Johnston.

Hi Kaitlyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
2 years ago I was working at a small coffee shop called On The Grind. That’s where I met Kika and Jenny. Kika is the owner of masterminds tattoos he had given me a business card and told me to come to see him when I wanted some more work done.

Well, I needed a paw added to my arm so I went.

As soon you walk in you get such good vibes! I ended up showing him some of my drawings since I have been drawing since the day I can remember and to my surprise, he offered me an apprenticeship! Me having very little knowledge of what you would need to do to become a tattoo artist however I did believe I would have to go to school and I’m not a big fan of school. I told him I didn’t think I had what it took and thanked him for the offer.

When I had gotten home I really had to sit down and think about what I wanted to do with my life because I wasn’t happy serving people coffee. After considering it I reached back out to Kika and told him if the offer is still on the table I would love to! Thanks to Kika and Jenny, my family, and my best friend Becca and my fiancé they all gave me the confidence and courage to get where I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think one of my main struggles would be that everything has to be perfect from the stencil to the tattoo itself.

Another struggle would be I don’t have all the confidence I should have with certain styles. For example color, I find very intimidating so it often leaves me to overthink it but luckily I have a mentor who helps me and really goes into detail about how to go about the color.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in fine line tattoos. At the beginning of my apprenticeship, I knew I had to work really hard on my lines so that’s what I did I would be at the drawing table for hours just practicing lines. I think one of the things that really pushed me was an artist who told me I was just going to be another artist whose work didn’t belong in a shop because I had no experience.

At that point, I knew I needed to prove him wrong. I think what sets me apart from other artists is I am straightforward with my clients. And I put my everything into each tattoo I do I never want someone to walk out with something they don’t love. Something I’m really proud of is how far I’ve come I’ve only been doing this for 2 years now and I have so many clients who come back for more and more tattoos from me.
