Today we’d like to introduce you to Deni Reed.
Hi Deni, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My grandpa was an award-winning musician and my family is very musically inclined so I grew up around music.
When I was 15, I would play the keyboard and sing but only for my close family and friends. At 20, I was bedridden because of severe anemia so all I had was music and art for a couple of years. I got a little more comfortable and started posting myself singing on social media in 2015. A year later I made my “official” move to San Antonio from California and decided to finally pursue music in 2018.
Around that time is when I started a weekly event called Coastal Sunday at Ventura in downtown San Antonio. My main objective was to shine a light on the passion and vision for artists in our city in a way that kept people wanting to come back for more, especially for the local hip-hop community. Unfortunately, Ventura closed down during the pandemic, but I now host Coastal Sunday Live with DJ J Allan at The Thirsty Camel! Every 3rd Sunday of the month we have an exclusive lineup.
I also recently released an EP called Piece of Mine on all streaming platforms, and I’m always updating my website with new merch/art drops.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I take my time with my creative process because I have so many outlets and that’s always been hard to juggle for me.
I made it a goal this year to step out of my comfort zone and just release all of my art. I have people in my corner who eagerly wait for me to drop anything that I put my heart into but I think that my supporters are able to understand if there’s a wait sometimes because I’ve always been transparent with them on social media.
They know that if I’m not doing one thing, then I’m doing another. Also, I am very picky and in the past, I never wanted to ask for help, but now I learned that it’s okay to ask for help and I try not to be too hard on myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an R&B singer, songwriter, creative, and event coordinator. I make music about love and heartbreak, I make clothes and art about being reckless, I write poetry about life, and I believe in bringing the city together for the love of music and art.
What do you think about luck?
I’ve been lucky enough to work with a lot of local artists, my events get recognized outside of San Antonio so that’s always really cool to hear, my art and clothes sell pretty fast so I’m very grateful for that but I definitely remain humble.
I don’t talk about myself often at all so this interview will probably surprise people lol Overall, I feel really blessed to be where I’m at. I know that God continues to give me what my heart desires in his own time and in his own way and I don’t take anything for granted.
