Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Rodriguez.
Hi Melody, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Before social media and digital cameras, I watched my mom document our life with film photos. We would be so excited to take the film to Walgreens to get it developed. I think that’s when I fell in love with photography. I would take nature photos on my first digital camera, and then in college, I took a news photography class, denying I’d ever become a portrait photographer until I did.
I did my first senior portrait session in 2012, and I was still in denial — or maybe just in fear — that I could ever be a photographer. I stayed a hobby portrait photographer for too long. Finally, in 2019, I went all in, and since then, God has blessed me and my family with a prosperous business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In a culture where photographers are everywhere — professional, hobbyist, and just on social media — I’ve struggled a lot with comparison and self-doubt.
Thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “I will never be like so and so,” filled my mind and still try to these days. But recently, with the help of the Holy Spirit, my church family, an amazing organization called Babes Support Babes, and my life coach, my confidence has grown exponentially and I know who I am and whose I am now!
I realize now that God called me to document this precious, fleeting life and show His light in the midst of hard times. I know now that my eye, my perspective, my voice, and my photography are needed and I have a place at the table.
As you know, we’re big fans of MC Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a family lifestyle photographer specializing in family and children. As a mom myself, I understand how quickly time passes and how our babies grow way too fast. This is why I love serving busy moms like myself by helping them document their life at every milestone and season, so they can not only enjoy the images themself but also leave a legacy to their children of photos that their moms were actually in.
I am most proud of two new things. One is a chic, glass-window greenhouse my dad, husband, and I recently built for photography! It’s stunning. The sunset light comes in through the back and it’s beautiful!
The second is a new service called The Legacy Collection, where I design a custom gallery wall of my client’s professional photos and then take care of everything from ordering prints, shipping, and even installation by my husband, a professional woodworker.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Above all else, God’s word is a must. It helps me function as a wife, mom, photographer, and teacher; in all the roles I play every day.
I also love listening to Leslie Owen’s Mission and Motherhood podcast, and I’ve loved reading Jennie Allen’s books like “Nothing to Prove.”
