Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Ramos.
Hi Carlos, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Carlos Ramos I reside in San Antonio but I’m originally from Palestine, Texas.
The last couple years I’ve been doing nothing but collecting anything from sculptures, jewelry, fossils, books, and more books. Besides that, my passion for picking started at a young age when my mother would go thrifting when I was a kid. At the time it wasn’t at all something that a normal 6 year old would enjoy but in the end I am thankful for those times. I would have rather been gaming or chasing women. Years from then I got into collecting and 3 years ago I came across “TEFAF Coffee talks fall 2019 programming” about the Duveens which the name itself I had never heard at the time. I was fascinated by the history and the story of thr Duveens which made me look more into on how at the time they shaped and transitioned the art industry during their lifetime. The Duveens were smart businessmen who knew how to turn contemporary Victorian and Edwardian mansions into veritable storehouses of the most expensive stuff, beautiful and otherwise. I was intrigued by their story and started to just casually look for unique items on my own. I purchased a sculpture (TMS) from a local (artist/collector) he greeted me at the door and when he opened the door I was able to catch a glimpse of a life-size tweety bird sculpture which was not something that I would see on a day to day basis. Oddly enough this piece caught my interest.
I was invited into the home and was blown away with what was inside (there was an estimate of 200-300 paintings in a 3-4 bedroom home). Don’t want to mention any names since Brian wanted to remain anonymous, but this guys collection basically led me to do what I do now he was somewhat of a mentor who had graduated with a masters in art from Syracuse, NY. Once my obsession with “picking” picked up I came across a book which was passed to me, but have mixed feelings about the book itself. (Goethes poems) The story itself got me down this road of being obsessed with book collecting and it has not stopped. My collection got a little out of hand and ended up with more first editions than I could imagine. Just to make a few of my favorites. I have the James Bond Ian Fleming books, where the wild things are, The Godfather, all dr Seuss and a few Harry potter books. The best way to get a glimpse of what I currently have would be to text me so I can send pictures of my updated inventory. (Serious inquires only) I pick for antiques and random art on a daily basis as well so my inventory tends to be quite diverse due to me networking with a few local pickers and shops.
I tend get a rush from picking some of the items that I find on a daily basis. It is definitely more of a hobby for me than anything else. The collector and I (Brian) were chosen to be on the show American Pickers but decided not to go through with it. due to personal reasons on his end. I have not spoken to him in quite sometime but definitely thankful I got to meet such a great individual whom taught me a few things.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No there have definitely been some bumps and hills on my path but I keep just doing what I enjoy regardless of how many wrongs turns I’ve taken or WILL TAKE. Since it is more of a hobby for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business I would say has some of the most unique, rare, and random items hand-picked by myself. Not all of what you see on my site is a personal interest of mine. I always try to think more from a customer’s perspective and try to pick items that I know are popular or will sell.
With that being said I do my own appraisal and research and put a realistic value on items so the customer is happy.
So rare and reasonable is something that I would love for it to stand for in the business industry.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
What matters most to me is that person that is purchasing the item is happy with the item and appreciates it for what it is.
