Daily Inspiration: Meet Steven Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Scott.

Steven, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Steven Scott, and I am an independent artist residing in Beaumont, Texas. I was born and raised in Jasper, Texas. I have actively been releasing music for three and a half years. I go by the artistic name of Hei$enberg, which actually comes from the television show Breaking Bad.

Music is something that I have always had a passion for. When I first started, I had no idea where to start. It is very difficult navigating in the music industry not having a team around you. I was determined to learn, so I spent a lot of my time doing research and making contacts in this industry on my own.

I guess you could definitely say I am a student of the game because there is so much to learn. I am still not where I need to be in this industry, but I feel like my willingness to invest in myself and spend countless hours learning the ins and outs has gotten me where I am today. I have covered a lot of ground in these, three and a half years but there is still so much work to be done.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. The music industry is not for the weak. You have to trust the process and be patient. I like to refer to the late Nipsey Hussle’s quote, “It is a marathon, not a sprint.” Most artists blow up overnight or go just as fast as they rise. I want to have longevity in this game. I also feel like you will appreciate the rise when it did not come so easily. I have my moments when I feel like things are not moving as fast as I would like, but I then tell myself that slow progress is better than no progress.

One of the struggles I have encountered is learning how to navigate the music industry. When I first started, I just wanted to make music. I soon realized that music is just a small piece of the puzzle. Branding is very important as well, and I did not realize that when I first started. Another challenge I have faced is not getting the same opportunity as an artist who is signed to a label because financial resources can be limited.

You have to put your own money up, but that comes with being independent. You are the Manager, CEO, Artist, etc. It is all up to you to make things happen, so you definitely need to have that drive to keep going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a recording artist. Most of my music is in the Hip-Hop genre. I am known for my song Skin Color which speaks about ending racism and police brutality. I am proud of the fact that I made a song that has a real message and it is resonating with people from all walks of life.

My mother loves the song, so that is definitely something I am proud of. I feel like my style is unique and that sets me apart from my peers.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My ambition and work ethic, along with not taking no for an answer.

I look at the word no as “next opportunity.” If the front door is closed, I will find a way to go through the back door. Believing in myself is another characteristic that is important to be successful in the music industry.
