Today we’d like to introduce you to JCL Creative Photo & Video.
Hi JCL Creative Photo & Video, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from France, we moved to the US when I was a child.
Although my father was a painter and musician I never thought of myself as a creative or artist, and most of my life has been spent doing technical things for a living. I bought a camera about five years ago to record trips with friends since I’ve always hated using phone cameras.
After watching a lot of YouTube videos to learn how to use it, I found out that you could make money doing stock photography so I tried it out. I spent the next few years shooting for stock, which was not very artistically inspiring but it did teach me how to take photos that were of high technical quality.
I never cared much about interacting with people since I am introverted, so my photos never dealt with any models. Then, in 2020 a friend was going to take some official photos with a phone and I said I would take them with my camera instead. I found that I really enjoyed it and decided to pursue it.
Recently, I started JCL Creative, my photography, and videography business. I still do stock but have expanded into real estate, commercial, food, and lifestyle, and my niche is classic/fine art portraiture.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have no professional or academic photography or videography training, I also don’t have any friends who do this, so I have had to learn everything either by trial and error or online resources.
I started with a vision of what I wanted to create, then had to figure out how to get there.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer and videographer. Although I enjoy a fairly wide spectrum of artistic interests from food to lifestyle, real estate, stock, landscapes, and commercial work, what really interests me most is classic and fine art portraiture.
My vision for a classic portrait is to cut through the fads and create timeless art that your great-grandchildrenwill be proudly displaying on their walls for generations from now.
When I think of how priceless even a small, grainy picture of your grandparents, when they were young, is, I realize that a great photo has intangible sentimental value. I strive to create the photos that you wish your prior generations had been able to leave for you so that you can leave your own for your descendants who will cherish them.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am not risk-averse, but I believe in making smart, calculated decisions.
Starting most businesses is a lot of work and usually expensive so you can’t be scared of risk if you want to succeed.
Doing the homework before taking the plunge goes a long way to turning risk into reward.
