Rising Stars: Meet Brenda Starr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Starr.

Hi Brenda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I come from a family of artists, musicians, and creatives.

I was always interested in art and music growing up and during secondary school ended up winning several art awards. I went on to focus on a degree in Psychology while in college and decided to add a second degree in Art because I really felt called to do what I was passionate about, just as something for me really.

While my concentration was primarily on painting during this time, I took one photography class and ended up falling in love with the darkroom process and developing photos. It only took working seasonally for a local photography studio for a few months after college to convince me to get into photography for myself.

While I’ve held several different office jobs over the years, I was never really the type to fit into the 9-5 mold and I’d always managed to be doing photography of some sort on the side. Life was guiding me down this path I really didn’t know I was meant to do until I somehow ended up being contacted by a major corporation and started traveling all over Texas doing photography for them.

Things accelerated relatively quickly for me within the company and as I was being promoted and receiving awards, COVID hit and my work became less steady. It was because of this that I decided to do photography for myself full time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
COVID threw a wrench in my plans but it was all redirection for the better. Its been an uphill learning curve deciding to upstart your own business during a pandemic, but it has been fruitful. I really try my best to refocus on staying positive despite different setbacks I’ve faced in life, so I like using my business as a means to give back to projects and non-profits that are meaningful to me and aligned with the same goals. As a solo entrepreneur, I will continue to push the envelope and keep growing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in family portraits and boudoir photography. These 2 genres are important to me because I feel they are the most authentic and true to life.

I consider my business heart-centered, I use my talents to help others see and feel beautiful, loved, empowered, and confident in their own skin, just as they are, and to celebrate their everyday relationships, authentic connections, and love.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The best about San Antonio is all the hidden gems and unique spots in and around town for shoots.

I like scouting and discovering new scenic and photogenic spots in and around SA. Battling traffic (and the Texas heat) to get there is the only thing I could do without.

Pricing:

  • Family Portraits – $185 deposit
  • Prints/Products/Packages – custom
  • Boudoir – starts at $950
  • Headshots/Real Estate – custom packages
