Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Hall.
Hi Sam, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
A lot of different roads lead to my career in real estate.
I graduated from Veterinary School in 1988 from Mississippi State University and practiced for about 3 years before joining the Air Force as Public Health Officer.
I had multiple assignments, eventually moving 8 times in my 25-year Air Force career. In the early 90s, I was stationed at Brooks AFB and also attended UTSA for my Masters in Public Health.
I was back in Texas for my squadron command tour at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls from 2006 to 2008 and my final tour out at Randolph AFB from 2011 until my retirement in 2016.
My time in veterinary practice and in the Air Force focused my attention on being of service to others. With my frequent moves and knowing the stresses of that, I decided to serve others once again in the real estate business.
I know the stressors of frequent moves, getting into and out of homes, and the challenges it presents, not only for military members but for everyone that faces the prospects of purchasing a home, selling their home, or both.
I love helping my clients navigate the often complex process of buying and selling homes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When you start a new career, you really don’t know what you don’t know! After being in the business for 6 years now, I still learn something with every transaction.
I think that a desire to learn and be open to new ideas is critical in the real estate industry. The market is always changing, there are new forms, laws, and approaches to getting offers accepted by your buyers and achieving the best possible outcomes for your sellers.
Having a great team behind me at my brokerage has been critical to addressing the struggles new agents have in the real estate industry. Working closely with my broker, and other experienced agents have made all the difference.
What I love about working at BHHS PenFed Realty is the support we get from our local manager, administrator, and also our larger brokerage team in DFW. That coupled with a collegial, family-like feeling among the agents has made this a great place to learn and succeed.
The Covid-19 pandemic presented unique challenges for REALTORS® nationwide. We had to find new ways of doing things and had to enter for the first time the virtual world for showings and even listing presentations. Having a good understanding of the technology platforms available to me to meet these challenges also gave me a huge leg up to help my clients at the highest levels.
Continuing real estate education and studying to earn several designations has meant more to me than getting some initials to put behind my name in the signature block. They provided me with new ways of approaching the challenges of this ever-changing business, ultimately helping me to better serve my clients.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in residential real estate and work with both buyers and sellers. For me, it is important to work both on the buyer’s side and to also be a listing agent. I believe it comes from something I learned in the Air Force, “Where you sit, is what you think.”
That means that as a buyer’s agent, I have to think like a buyer, work to get them the best possible deal on the home they are trying to purchase, and do my best to get their offer accepted. Because I work as a listing agent too, I know the things that will be most favorable to the seller and how to structure an offer to increase my buyer client’s chances of winning the offer.
When I work with sellers, I strive to get them the highest possible net proceeds from the sale of their home and can also work to help them time their sale just right if I am trying to help them purchase a new home. Continuing to work with buyers and sellers helps me understand how to serve each client better.
For me, I strive to make every transaction as easy as possible for my buyers/sellers and I am proud of the higher level of service I set out to provide. I want my clients to be raving fans at the end of their home sale/purchase. All real estate agents build their business based on reputation and service.
The happiest I am at the end of a transaction is when I read my client’s review comments. I love the kind words they have to say and it makes all the long days 100% worth it.
I do one other thing that I think is critical in real estate, I tell my clients I want to be their Forever Agent®! By that, I mean I am not going anywhere after the transaction closes. I do my best to keep in touch and make sure things are going well after the sale of the home.
Many times I am able to help them work through concerns before they become problems.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Pick your brokerage wisely. It’s not all about commission splits, and big names. Choosing a brokerage that provides training and taking advantage of that training is critical.
Never be scared to ask your broker questions, you can prevent a lot of problems by asking before you make a mistake that could cost you or your clients money. None of us were born knowing how to do this or any other business.
I had a lot of professional experience before I started my real estate career, and going to Real Estate School taught me how to pass the state and national exams, but now how to BE a REALTOR®. As you get ready to launch your career, start with a business mindset. Treat it like a business, show up every day for yourself and work on your business.
Like any business, you need a business plan and a great place to start is a visit with an accountant to figure out what things you need to be tracking for tax purposes and what documentation you will need to help you write off your allowable expenses.
I did this and it has made my tax situation so much better.
