Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Huls.
Hi Garrett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a resourceful, creative person. In Elementary (during the ’90s), I would illustrate custom South Park characters for fun and ended up selling each one for a dollar. My mom taught me to laminate so that they’d last longer and kids would really be getting their value or “money’s worth”.
I continued to draw cartoons, build things, skateboard, and play baseball all through middle and high school. I also frequented thrift stores and estate sales as a kid, thanks to my grandpa. He was an entrepreneur who unintentionally taught me the work ethic and the way of making money on my terms, fueling that creative drive, intuition, and skill of seeing potential in things.
I was encouraged to pursue my passion. I was engulfed in creative culture. I attended the Art Institute and played in a punk rock band that traveled all the time. More shows meant more posters/flyers designed. Each show was an opportunity to make art. Every day became an opportunity to make something new.
Short story long, I designed my way up from being a bus boy at a seafood restaurant, to production designer at a local business-card print shop, to New York for an apparel design gig, to a well-established advertising agency where I worked on clients like Minor League baseball, restaurant branding, home-builders and any other industry you can probably think of.
I am currently the Senior Designer for the San Antonio Spurs and owner of Huls Design, a design studio with my wife, who has a few big-name clients who we are grateful to call our friends.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s always been up and down. In 2009, I moved to a small town with a design degree and no one knew what it was or what I could do. It took a long time of educating people and just do the work, letting the work speak for itself.
Since then, the city has grown a ton and has an amazing design program at TAMUCC. I’m super proud to have critiqued student portfolios and seen them flourish in real creative careers.
I’ve designed things from business cards to creative campaigns, to airplane wraps, to NBA uniforms with Nike. Now, my wife and I are fortunate enough to have our own list of clients under Huls Design. We’re still grateful when a new idea or request comes in because you never know when a slow month will hit.
As I said, it’s always been up and down and still can be like that sometimes when you run your own business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a creative person with a design degree and a business called Huls Design.
I specialize in branding, design, art, and work as the Sr. Graphic Designer for the San Antonio Spurs. My most known projects have been the Spurs x Selena capsule collection, La Cultura Season 1 thru 3, and the Fiesta storyline where we brought back the vibe of the beloved 90’s Spurs.
I’m most proud of starting a creative business with my wife where we live and thrive in San Antonio, Texas!
