Daily Inspiration: Meet Eddy “Versatile” Keyz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddy “Versatile” Keyz.

Hi Eddy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My mother always told me that I wouldn’t play with any toys unless it was music-related. I remember her telling me that I would throw a fit if I didn’t sit in the second row next to the piano player at church. I would play the back of the pew as if I was playing the piano. Since I was a child music has been a huge part of my life. After being molested by my cousin music was always my escape. Music has helped me recover from a dark place of depression, anger, and sadness. With that came trust issues, sex addiction, not wanting to be bothered, and just wanting to be secluded. Imagine growing up and the only thing you trust is black and white keys. Fast forward a few years later after playing in church and being a minister of music I knew what I wanted to do as a career. For some time I was the only musician at my church. I had this specific keyboard called the Yamaha Motif Xs and I would literally program each song from drums, horns, guitars, etc and that’s what sparked music production. My sound is influenced by my favorite music producers. Kirk Franklin, Warryn “Baby Dub” Campbell, Timbaland, Bryan Michael Cox, Teddy Riley, and my all-time favorite Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. I started producing in 2012 and in 2016 I was able to quit my job and do music full time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced was self-doubt. Sometimes hearing the noise of others will sit with you sometimes. “get a real job, you know most people don’t make it” When I would hear things like that I would begin to think that I wasn’t good enough, and I couldn’t make it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, my producer name is “Versatile” and with being a playwright, music producer, and a musician who began to specialize in different genres. If I had to say what I truly specialize in I would say R&B, Pop, Gospel/Christian Music, and Hip Hop. When you study great producers and begin to listen to different types of music you begin to create your own sound and genre. What I’m most proud of is that in spite of all the noise that I heard I’m still doing what I love. From getting placements on radio and Tv to being nominated for the gospel choice awards “Song of the Year” and “CD Project of the Year.” I believe what truly sets me apart from others is the fact that I listen to my artist. Most times you find producers that will dictate and not let the artist have any input. I believe I really help artist find their true sound.

What makes you happy?
A lot of things make me happy but making music truly makes me happy. Just having the ability to start with a blank canvas and literally create something very unique and original that can’t be done by anyone else. You are the only you and can’r nobody on the face of the earth do it as you can.
