Meet Gabriela Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Garcia.

Hi Gabriela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Even as a kid, I knew I loved fashion. Clothes, colors, shoes, style…I saw how all those elements worked together and wanted to learn how and why. So when it was time for college I knew what I wanted to study and soon found myself at La Arturo Tejada Cano in Bogota, Colombia studying Fashion Design. After that, I spent time in Paris and South America taking in the world of fashion design and art in general. All those experiences are still with me today as I continue to design clothing and create fashion illustrations.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life in the arts is never going to be smooth. But really, for me, experiencing the life of an immigrant has been the biggest hurdle. And unless you’ve been an immigrant, it’s hard to truly understand what it’s like. I’ll just say that it’s been very challenging and very humbling. But that kind of adversity makes experiences like designing a runway show for The Texas Fashion Week (2021) even more special.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m really excited to be starting the design process for my next runway show, but currently, it’s my fashion illustrations that have been keeping me really busy. I’ve found some success recently selling my work at art markets throughout South Texas and have also started doing fashion illustration in a live studio setting for weddings and corporate events.

What matters most to you? Why?
My art. My work. My love. My family. What else is there, right?
