Life & Work with Stephanie Minton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Minton.

Hi Stephanie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been really crafty and liked to host gatherings with my friends and family at my home. Anything to have some themed decor!

We’ve done theme parties such as Christmas, 4th of July, NYE, Super Bowl, Halloween, etc.

So this year, I wanted to have a Galantines/Birthday picnic with my closest gal pals. I had been thinking about it last year and decided to gather all the items and do it on my own. I started accumulating picnic items and eventually started to build my inventory. Upon doing so, I found it very rewarding and told my husband about my idea of owning a small pop up picnic business. He of course, was on board and now assists me with my new venture. I started setting up picnics for family and friends and with their support, I started to connect to other small businesses. Currently, I work alongside with the owner of Grazing with Steph. Her charcuterie options are an add on service to my picnic experience.

I do work full time as a Licensed Professional Counselor and am also a mom to a wonderful five-year-old daughter, so my services tend to be specified for use on the weekends. However, when a picnic is booked, I work on a vision board right away in hopes that I can find those special touches to incorporate to my clients’ picnic experience. To me, this business is my creative outlet and I find it very rewarding to be a part of a client’s memorable event. I hope to make my mark in the small business world and am grateful for all the support and connections that I have so far!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It can be a challenge at times due to the fact that I work full time during the week and tend to my family when I am home. I think that sometimes finding the right audience for my services can also be a struggle. But I am working on coming up with more marketing strategies and building more connections with other small businesses.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My profession is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and I have been working in mental health over the past ten years. I love this line of work and what I do. However, it can become overwhelming from time to time.

Due to the pandemic, there was an uptick for mental health counseling and the stories I would hear everyday took a toll on me and my own mental health. Luckily, I changed paths in my counseling career and now work at a career school. I love the atmosphere and my work family.

My coworkers have been very supportive in my new venture with my small business. I am known there for my decorating skills, and take pride in creating a fun environment for each student or person who comes into my office. I think that creating the right ambiance helps you gain some form of trust with each person, as you are letting them see a little bit of your world through your decor and creativity. I have had many students and employees compliment me on it. So I am grateful that I am able to express myself at work and with my small business.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I think that one thing that I wish someone would have done, was tell me to just go for it! It took me a minute to start because I just kept playing with the idea of starting my business. I wish that I would have just went for it! I think that we tend to hold ourselves back, and I would say that finding the right support system will definitely help in starting a new venture!
