Inspiring Conversations with Alfred Munoz of Bad Company Athletics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfred Munoz.

Hi Alfred, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been into fitness and working out ever since I was a young boy. I remember going with my father to the local YMCA and working out with him. Back then I was into bodybuilding (which I am still very passionate about) but, as the years went by and life started to happen I didn’t make bodybuilding my career choice. Instead, I joined the marine corps where I served for 5 years where I was part of Operation Iraqi freedom. I got out in 2003 and went back to my home town Odessa Tx. I got married to my high school sweetheart and we moved to San Antonio in 2010 when I got accepted into the San Antonio fire department. I began my coaching career when my two sons began playing sports. I began training kids out of my garage. Around this time I also competed in my first powerlifting meet during the Texas Summer Firefighter games. I fell in love with the sport and this is where my journey in powerlifting truly began. I have competed in several meets including Nationals and American Championships. I am also a Texas firefighter state record holder. I decided to go back to school and get my degree in sports and health science from American Military University. This also lead me to become a certified powerlifting coach with United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) and USA Powerlifting (USPAPL). I wanted to give back to powerlifting so I also became a State referee with USAP. One of my goals led me to open my gym is to give our youth a different avenue to getting noticed by colleges. The sport has grown so much that more colleges are adapting powerlifting as a sport. Students can even earn scholarships at some colleges now. Despite being in the middle of the pandemic I was able to open Bad Company Athletics. We are a small private gym specializing in powerlifting and athletic development but, we are also open to all athletes, bodybuilders, and general gym goers.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There definitely have been challenges. As I stated we opened during the pandemic and we came across issues like finding a location because not were place was opened back up. And if they were leasing they wanted Six plus months in advance. Currently, I am the only person running the gym and I am also a full time San Antonio firefighter so, I have to balance my time between the two. I also have to balance family time. My wife and I are the sole financers so, we were not able to get all the equipment we wanted at first. Not to mention equipment was just hard to find because of the pandemic but, we made it work. We still do not have everything we want in the gym but we have what we need to get the job done and, we are slowly added new equipment when we can. It’s been a tough beginning but it’s my dream and I won’t give up on it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Bad Company Athletics is a private gym located on the North westside of San Antonio. We are a powerlifting gym but I am also an athletic development coach. We are open to everyone so you don’t have to be an athlete, or powerlifter to come join the gym. I have grown my team to 10 athletes with several of them being state record holders. I coach my athletes to not only be the best they can be but to also be able to coach others. I want to build a community where everyone helps and encourages everyone. We are family. My goal is to build the premier powerlifting program in San Antonio.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family is number one on my list of things that make me happy. We are a very close family and just love spending time with each other. Being at my gym coaching lifters learn the sport of powerlifting would come next. There is just something about the sound of the weights being lifted and the look on an athlete’s face when they hit new PRs that makes me smile.
