Today we’d like to introduce you to Keke Powell.
Hi Keke , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Aloha!
My name is Keke Powell and I recently just relocated back to the great state of Texas! I lived in Hawaii for the past ten years and it was an absolute blast! I received a soccer scholarship from Chaminade University of Honolulu and ended up staying after I graduated. This is my seventh year in education and have taught grades 2-5. I am currently teaching in Boerne and landed in the best small school district! Teaching will always be a passion of mine because of student relationships. When students respect you, then you build that trust to challenge them to do great things in the classroom. I have always enjoyed trying new things and challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone. When I am not in the classroom, then you can catch me on social media!
When covid first started, I was bored at home and thought why not try to be a social media influencer. I enjoy seeing other educators showcase the great ideas in their classroom and wanted to give it a try. I searched on google “how to create a website” and had utilized my boyfriends abilities. He is a graphic designer for his own company, Missing Link Design, and he brought my ideas to life. I created @mspowellteaches as my brand to showcase many things. I love to cook, eat, and teach people new things. My design is a book character with a shaka. I wanted an image that represented me in animation. A shaka is iconic in Hawaii and will always be my “right on” sign. Now in 2022, I have many companies reaching out to me to either collaborate and work with them or review their products.
In my free time, I am very active on Yelp and love to help out some of my favorite business! This is my fifth year as a Yelp Elite and highlighting business in my community. I have about 100,000 people who read my reviews. It started about five years ago as a hobby. As a teacher, I enjoy writing and expressing my ideas. I had no idea it would take off this far! I try to make my reviews very positive and funny! I try to drop names of my waiters/waitress so they can get some recognitions too! I try to make a list of many new places to try and go visit them on the weekends. My all time favorite place is Del Norte in Kerrville. They have the best buffets!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a lot of trial and error! I have learned what works best for me and the business I support. If I don’t know how to do something, then I try my best to Youtube how to do it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a second grade teacher and teach all the subject areas. Science is my favorite subject and I wish I could teach it all day! I am known for doing a lot of fun activities and my classroom parents are very supportive! They are always bringing in items that I may need for future lessons. I always appreciate any gesture that will help benefit the students. My grade level is super supportive and I am blessed to work with some awesome educators!
I am most proud of my accomplishments in Education. Something that sets me apart from others are my certifications. I am an Ambassador for Discovery Education, Seesaw, Class Dojo, Go Noodle, Kahoot! and Epic! I’m a Brainpop Certified Educator, Google Certified, and a Clever Champion. Pretty much this means that I like to be a master in all the programs I use in school. I want to make the most out of each program and find ways to integrate it into my teaching. Each program has something unique to offer and brings excitement to my students.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is growing up and playing soccer. Soccer was my world for a very long time! I have been playing since I was four years old and was the reason that helped me become a collegiate athlete. Anyone that has a dream to pursue a sport, I highly recommend going for it! It was so awesome to play soccer in Hawaii and meet people from all over the world!
