Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen R. Tellez.
Hi Carmen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello my name is Carmen Tellez and I am a Biologist and Esthetician, I started my skin care brand- Dewy Organics in 2017.
During my undergrad as Biology student at TAMIU, I became consumed with the idea that fungi and plant based ingredients can power your daily skin care routine and lifestyle. I felt an immense amount of joy to be able to use my Biology degree and chemistry studies as well as to express my creative side by formulating with distinct ingredients and making the packaging as aesthetically pleasing and sustainable as possible. From there I started to make a clearer vision towards my career and the words “Dewy Labs and Spa” stuck with me for years. I knew I wanted both a lab and spa to create products and experiences for people of all skin types to enjoy.
After graduating I came to San Antonio to attend Aveda Esthiology Arts and Sciences to gain a deeper understanding of the skin and the aesthetics industry. Which helped me understand ingredients for different skin types and how to use ingredients for targeted skin results.
After obtaining the knowledge I felt necessary to build a skin care brand I was able to launch a professional website featuring a newly released product. A daily gel and fungi based cleanser named the Regenerating Reishi and Rose Gel Cleanser that’s very gentle and beneficial for all skin types.
This new year I partnered with a very talented esthetician-Aponi Balders, and opened the doors to our new Dewy Skin Studio using Dewy Organics products along with other professional grade brands and technology.
It’s exciting that we are offering a very unique and intimate space where we focus on a one on one experience with notable hospitality.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has and continues to be a bumpy road, by several different factors along the way.
At first, I didn’t feel the confidence that I needed in order to run my business. I felt that I did not have the support. Due to that, I felt like I could never ask for help when I moved to San Antonio to study esthetics and expand my business.
I can never forget about one of my very first markets in San Antonio when I had to pay for parking downtown and had no money. I called up a friend and was able to pay her back after my market, making twenty times that amount. It was then that I realized I have to have faith in my hard work and I have to keep pushing in order to see it through.
When people began to notice my business was growing they started to take interest and would try to take advantage of me by trying to scam me with deals or false promises. Through trial and error, I learned to detect those scams and say no more firmly in order to not fall into similar situations.
My most recent struggle was when trying to find a skincare laboratory that would work with me. I felt like many labs viewed me as a young naive girl with not enough money or experience. Thankfully, I was able to find a lab that would work with my unit order size and have found other people amongst my journey that equally respect me.
We’ve been impressed with Dewy Organics LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Not only are we the only skin studio utilizing Fungi and CBD for face and body treatments but we use technology based approach by using high frequency, ultrasonic frequencies, oxygen, and LED light therapy treatments that target numerous skin conditions. Here in the studio we also distill custom herbal blends of hydrosols that we distill during facials for aromatherapy benefits.
Researching and understanding our ingredients at a cellular level we created an exceedingly distinctive formula and facial approach that features ingredients benefiting both aging and acne-prone skin. We partnered with a reputable local laboratory with high-grade quality organic ingredients and services in order to test and refine formulas as well as undergo sample testing, efficacy, and third-party microbial testing studies.
Built from the ground up we designed sustainable and eco-friendly products and packaging by amalgamating vibrant colors and icons to capture the eye. Another mission of Dewy Organics is to stimulate the community’s economy by partnering with other local companies and by providing new job opportunities.
There are many reasons why you would want to buy our products, but the main reason is that they are natural products that promote healthy skin and well-being.
How do you define success?
I define success as experiencing happiness, adventure, overcoming fears, celebrating small victories, achieving long-term goals, and knowing I can control my own destiny.
