Daily Inspiration: Meet Angelica Duran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Duran.

Angelica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been a creative person. I grew up with a love for drawing as well as crafting. I watched my mother crochet all my life. She made all of our Halloween costumes and crocheted our Christmas stockings. I watched as she made holiday decorations and gifts for the family. This is where I grew a love and appreciation for handmade items.

Items made with love. Naturally, I became a maker as well and started a couple of businesses. The current one is Arte Mia Crafts.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a maker and deciding to make it a business isn’t as smooth as we’d like it to be. It’s tough knowing how to keep it enjoyable and not allowing it to turn into work. Doing what I love shouldn’t be stressful.

Learning when to step back and take a break or slow down was a struggle. But fortunately, through trial and error, I believe I’ve figured it out. I know what works for me now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I enjoy creating and working in several mediums. Arte Mia Crafts was developed as a safe space allowing me to be an artist of all things. I didn’t want to be confined in one creative box. I am free to paint on canvas, design earrings, make t-shirts, stickers, and anything else my heart desires.

Currently, my creative focus is on dessert candles and wax melts. My background in cake artistry made whipping up wax and creating a hot fudge sundae feel like second nature. It’s fun and eye-catching. Knowing I can make wax look exactly like our favorite desserts and drinks seems magical to me.

The fact that everyone seems to love them as much as I do is amazing.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience… that’s the most important thing I’ve learned. I get excited about my ideas and want to throw everything out all at once. That really isn’t the best way to do things.

I now take my time, I’m much more calculated with photos, social media posts, markets, and all other areas of my business. I’ve seen a positive change since I’ve slowed down and now plan each project out.

I’ve been very blessed to be able to do what I love and get paid for it. I’m enjoying my creative journey and can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
