Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Medellin.
Hi Angela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Growing up, I had the privilege of having a grandfather who instilled the values of serving and helping others. The life he lived was exemplary as he modeled kindness, compassion, empathy, and doing as much good for all when he could.
It was the life he lived that set the standard and started me on my journey to join the helping profession and become a counselor. I knew very young that helping others is what I wanted to do with my life. When I was in college and pursuing my Master’s, I became obsessed with a show called Private Practice and In Treatment. From that point on, I decided I wanted to open my own private practice that had a multidisciplinary team of individuals working to help patients in a private practice setting.
After graduation, I set out to join a private practice in order to learn everything I needed before venturing into my goals. My grandfather would always say “The best way to make God laugh is to come up with a plan”. And as fate should have it, things looks a little different for me than what I originally planned.
Today, I am still living my dream as the co-owner of a private practice called Mind Works that specializes in helping children ages 3-17 and their caregivers. This private practice is integrated and provides therapy, testing, and medication for children all under the same roof. We currently have 3 locations and a forth one opening in a few months.
I would not be where I am today if I had not had the opportunity to meet someone that was so inspirational in my life. Every day, I have the opportunity to live up to what my grandfather instilled in me when I was a child. The work I do with children and their families allows me to show compassion, empathy, and kindness, and to live a life that I know he would be proud of.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been an opportunity for growth in every step of the way. Opening multiple locations and learning as I go has taught me to be flexible, patient, and to never give up. The most difficult time for me was and continues to be navigating helping children in a global pandemic. The challenge to provide mental health services to children through a virtual platform is something I never expected or thought I would be doing.
Having a therapy session through telehealth with a 5 year old has it’s own challenges, as I’m sure many parents would agree. The virtual platform hasn’t been ideal for many children, but during the peak of the pandemic, we had no choice. But like most of us, I have had to navigate many new things and pivot as a business and how we operate and provide services to children.
As you know, we’re big fans of Mind Works. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Mind Works is an integrated private practice that specializes in treating children ages 3-17 and their caregivers. Mind Works has created a system of working with children and their families in a way that is tailored to the individual needs of the child.
We also use evidenced based treatment modalities and train our staff so that parents can feel confident knowing that their child is being treated by professionals that are held to a higher standard of care. We also have treatment team meetings where different providers from a multidisciplinary team can collaborate and share best treatment approaches to help the child.
Our model also includes a high degree of parent collaboration so that we are not only working with the child, but teaching and supporting parents in the process.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters is that we try and help as many children and families as we can for as long as we can. My goal is that Mind Works would still be around after I’m gone and that I can leave a legacy behind. Helping children is at the heart of the company and making sure that we can make a positive impact one child at a time is the vision.
Children are the future generation, and every child that we impact has the opportunity to become an amazing adult one day.
