Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Welch.
Brittney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a born and raised Florida gal (Go Jags!), who moved to Boston when my husband started medical school, then went even further up north to Maine, and now I am in San Antonio, Texas! We moved here about two years ago when my husband started his residency. San Antonio has quickly felt like home to us. The people, the views, and of course, the FOOD have all been wonderful. Being a photographer not only gives me the opportunity to meet lots of amazing people but also allows me to explore all the beauty the city has to offer. From the sprawling downtown scene to historic landmarks and every lively nook in-between, it’s no surprise why so many people want to live here.
I have been a professional photographer for about four years, but have had a camera in my hand since I can remember. To me, photography gives me the opportunity to combine the things I love most: Art, love, and people. No matter how many sessions I do, there is something so magical about being invited into someone’s life for a short period of time, and documentary them as they are in that moment. Whether it’s the first kiss at a wedding or a child’s first birthday, capturing these snapshots of people’s lives is something I treasure.
When I am not shooting or playing with my dogs, I am probably at my gym, CrossFit San Antonio! In addition to being a photographer, I am a CrossFit coach! Being healthy and active is such an important part of my life, and not gonna lie, I need some serious shoulder and back strength to carry my equipment at weddings!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As with starting any small business, there come a number of obstacles and challenges. In my case, I started my business and then moved to a new state (Texas) shortly afterward, At the time, it felt like starting over – a new client base that wasn’t familiar with my work, new locations that I hadn’t shot at – the list goes on. However, with every struggle comes opportunities to learn and challenge yourself, and that’s how I chose to tackle my blank slate.
As much as I’d like to say my positive spirit did the trick, COVID threw a wrench in my plans (as well as everyone else’s). The lull in business was definitely tough, but I used that time to turn my attention to my website, marketing, and social media. This ultimately paid off, because once life slowly returned to normal, my branding was in a much better place. I am thankful for that time to be able to focus on branding because now that I am busier I am so happy knowing my marketing aligns with who I am as a photographer and person.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional photographer specializing in wedding and family photography. I would say I am known for creative, fun sessions that showcase my clients’ unique personalities and love stories. For example, one of my favorite couples’ sessions took place in a laundromat. I just trying out new things and un-traditional locations – and my clients do too! I think that one thing that sets me apart from others is my unabashed love for people.
I am definitely not shy, and love getting to know clients on a deeper level so they are able to let loose and have fun during their session. Capturing clients when they feel at peace and sincerely joyful is something that I pride myself on.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing not a lot of people know about me is that I am also a CrossFit coach! Oftentimes, clients will be surprised to see me running around a wedding carrying all my gear on my own. All that heavy lifting at the gym really pays off when hauling light stands!
