Rising Stars: Meet Nathan Felix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Felix.

Hi Nathan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Grew up in Austin. Self-taught guitarist. Rejected from music school. Started a band. Got signed. Toured the world. Got bored. Scored films. Got bored. Discovered classical music. Went to the library. Studied music books. Wrote a symphony. Got bored. Wrote a choral symphony. Got bored. Wrote an opera. Fast forward to today.

I present opera and classical music in unique ways such as a ‘silent’ opera, six-pianos in surround sound, an opera on a bus, and more! It only interests me if it’s exciting, experimental, and pushing boundaries.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been smooth minus the thousands of rejection letters, emails, struggles, and failures. But a lot of people have it harder in the world so I can’t complain.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make music and sounds for my ear. I compose the same melodies, notes, and chord structures over and over and over because I like the way they sound and it’s easy. It’s then labeled as classical music.

I’m probably known for being annoying and difficult but I’d like to think I’m mostly known for being a classical music composer who produces immersive operas and events that activate untraditional spaces relative to most classical music and opera concerts. I self-produced my concerts in warehouse spaces, under bridges, on public transportation, in museums, etc. I also direct and create experimental films and film installations.

I’m actually most proud of my films! It’s cool to have my experimental films featured in art galleries, considering I’m a music person.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Go out every night to see a show, art exhibit, or performance. The real magic happens backstage or after an event. If you stay home you lose out.
