Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Diaz.
Hi Victoria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to NYC to attend an in-person personal training school because I was interested in learning more about movement and the body. Upon graduating from the school, I was hired at a private personal training company that operated in NYC. It was there that I worked with Starting Strength Coach, Brent Carter.
Through my time working with him I was exposed to Starting Strength and eventually started doing the program. Through that time of training, I became interested in becoming a Starting Strength Coach, and Brent was influential in helping me pursue and eventually receive the credential.
Fast forward four years and he is now opening his 3rd Starting Strength Gym and I have the honor of working with him at the San Antonio location.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I’m sure it was for many, COVID and the lockdowns threw a wrench in a lot of plans. My husband and I were still in NYC in March 2020 with no real intention of leaving anytime soon. I was no longer working inside of a gym and all of the training clients I had were now training with me online.
It was very difficult to have the physical connection between people removed and it had more negative impacts than I think people realize. Thankfully, my husband and I both decided that NYC wasn’t the place for us anymore and we moved south in June 2020. Without a plan, we left hoping to find work in our fields somewhere else.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Starting Strength San Antonio our goal is to help people achieve their goals by getting them stronger through barbell training. We coach our clients according to the Starting Strength method.
What sets us apart? We are a coaching gym. When you train for strength there is a good amount of time that you have to rest in between sets. When you’re resting we’re on to the next platform coaching the next lifter. And we’ll do that around the room and when you’re time is up we’ll come back to your platform. This allows us to coach every lifter’s rep for every working set. We cap our classes at seven lifters so the coach is able to give quality coaching to each client.
I’m most proud of the community that we get to build and the difference it makes in our clients’ lives. There is something special that happens when you get people in the same room with the same goal, they get stronger. The why is different for everyone but the how to go about it is the same.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I have learned that we need to be around people in order to thrive. We are not designed to go through life alone. And whether it is a small circle of people or large you need people around you to help you get through life.
