Meet Hana Buck of bright/NoFi/Perdido

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hana Buck.

Hi Hana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Curiosity can be a powerful launching pad. I was raised to always ask questions and search for improvement. This practice led me to discover the world of specialty coffee and helped me realize my calling. I worked several jobs through my twenties in multiple industries from service to retail to marketing. Through those experiences, I gained the skills and confidence that prepared me to jump into whatever idea I wished to commit to.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In my opinion, if the road is smooth, growth is not likely. The challenges I’ve faced are fairly typical. Leading a team of people without prior leadership experience. How to make the business profitable while scaling. Deciding where to draw the line between specialty & commodity coffee. Learning about plumbing & electrical work against my will. And the toughest challenge of all: deciding what to do next.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about bright/NoFi/Perdido?
bright
Our first shop opened in February 2022. We had a vision for a space that lent itself to the community and served exciting coffees from a variety of roasters all over the world. At the time, I was actively involved in my local swing dance organization volunteering, teaching, and organizing events. This combined with my support for other local artists were the magic ingredients that led to the establishment of bright. Nestled in the Beacon Hill neighborhood here in San Antonio, this shop has flourished into a community hub where folks can gather, connect, and discover something new.

NoFi
In the age of grab-n-go coffee culture, we wondered if it would be possible to erase the noise & provide a space of intention that brings focus to what’s in front of you. This led us to the idea of a wifi-free, dine-in only coffee space. Since October 2024, NoFi slow bar has been serving San Antonio offering a rotating menu of 10-12 coffees at a time along with an extensive tea list & unique signature beverages.

Perdido
Our most recent venture has been in the coffee roasting sector. Roasting out of the modest back space of NoFi, our mission is to source true micro-lot coffees with compelling and unique tasting profiles. In our first year, we’ve had the privilege of working with passionate and dedicated producers who aren’t afraid to push the envelope in terms of quality.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
You can’t take care of anyone else if you are not taking care of yourself.
