Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Miller.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Where It All Started & Where I Am Now
My story starts with the military.
I grew up an Army brat. My dad served in the Army for more than 20 years, and then I went on to marry into the military. My husband is now a veteran, so for a huge part of my life, the military wasn’t just something my family was connected to, it was our way of life.
We moved. A lot. Before San Antonio, staying somewhere for three years felt normal. Now I’ve been in San Antonio for over 10 years, and honestly, that’s still a little mind-blowing to me.
There are definitely things I don’t miss about military life, but I miss the community more than I can explain. It’s a special kind of family. I also think growing up that way shaped so much of who I am today. I learned how to adapt, how to walk into a room where I didn’t know anyone, how to start over, and how to make connections with all kinds of people.
Funny enough, my career didn’t actually start in marketing.
I went to school for web development, and that’s where everything changed. One of my instructors and mentors took me in and I went to a completely different world and helped open the door to marketing. That eventually led me to working with Veronica Morales and The Social Being, who opened so many more doors for me.
From there, I got to do a little bit of everything.
Social media. Events. Hospitality. Restaurants. Local businesses. Conferences. Tourism.
I had opportunities to work with places like Splashtown San Antonio, the Sheraton Gunter including their restaurant and bar, along with other San Antonio businesses. I helped with social media for companies in completely different industries and worked on events and conferences throughout downtown San Antonio.
And I loved it.
Then COVID happened.
The travel and hospitality industry took a huge hit, and like so many people, I had to figure out what came next. I switched gears and spent a couple of years working in marketing for a medical spa. It was another completely different industry, another learning curve, and another chapter.
Eventually, all of those random-looking pieces of my career somehow led me exactly where I am now: TLP Mortgage.
Today, I get to take everything I’ve learned over the years, web development, social media, branding, events, content creation, community building, relationship marketing and probably 500 other things I’ve picked up along the way, and use them in one place.
And I absolutely love my job.
When I look back, my career definitely wasn’t a straight line. But neither was my life.
I grew up learning that sometimes you pack up, move somewhere new, meet new people and figure it out as you go. Apparently, I carried that lesson into my career too.
Every chapter taught me something. Every person who took a chance on me opened another door. Every unexpected pivot gave me another skill.
And somehow, all those different versions of me led me here.
Military brat. Military spouse. Web development student. Social media manager. Event marketer. Hospitality marketer. Medical spa marketer. And now, Marketing Director at TLP Mortgage.
It’s definitely not the career path I could have mapped out when I started.
But I wouldn’t change the journey that got me here.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If I had the chance to change anything about my career, I honestly don’t think I would.
That doesn’t mean every part of the journey was easy. There have definitely been some bumpy roads, and when those challenges hit, they hit hard. But I believe everything happens for a reason. Every difficult season, unexpected change and career pivot taught me something I needed to know for the next chapter.
One of the biggest challenges in marketing is that it never stays the same for very long. It’s an industry you constantly have to keep up with. Trends change, platforms change, algorithms change and the way people communicate continues to evolve.
The best example of that right now is artificial intelligence. AI is changing the way people work, create content and approach marketing. It can feel overwhelming at times, especially when you’re trying to understand what tools are useful, what trends are worth following and how to keep up without losing the human side of what you do.
I try to take it all in stride.
I make it a point to keep learning, stay aware of what’s trending and try to learn something new every day. Then I take what I learn and pass it along to our Realtor partners, who are the people I help on a daily basis.
My goal is to help them stay visible, connected and top of mind with their clients and communities. At the same time, I want to keep TLP Mortgage top of mind too, not by making us feel overly corporate or impersonal, but by showing the people behind the company.
Marketing should feel human. It should be useful, relatable and sometimes even fun.
That’s especially important in the mortgage industry, where people are making major financial decisions and need to feel like they can trust the people guiding them. I want our Realtor partners and their clients to see TLP Mortgage as knowledgeable and professional, but also approachable, genuine and easy to connect with.
The challenges in marketing will always be there. There will always be a new platform, a new trend, a new tool or a new obstacle to figure out.
But I’ve learned that I don’t have to know everything all at once. I just have to stay curious, keep learning, adapt when necessary and continue moving forward.
That mindset has carried me through every chapter of my career.
And when I look back, I still wouldn’t change the journey that got me here.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Eventually, all of those random-looking pieces of my career somehow led me exactly where I am now: Marketing Director at TLP Mortgage.
And this role has really brought everything full circle.
I handle pretty much all aspects of our marketing, from our website and social media to content creation, branding, events and everything in between. But one of my favorite parts of my job is working one-on-one with our Realtor partners and putting on fun events.
I’m not just marketing TLP Mortgage. A big part of what I do is helping our partners market themselves.
That might mean sitting down with a Realtor to brainstorm content, helping them promote a listing or open house, creating marketing materials, planning an event, teaching them how to use a new tool, or simply figuring out how they can show up more consistently without marketing feeling like another full-time job.
But out of everything I’ve created or accomplished throughout my career, what I’m most proud of are the relationships I’ve built along the way.
And that goes far beyond business.
I feel incredibly blessed that I’ve actually had the opportunity to work side-by-side with my best friend, who is our VA Queen, Tiffanie Prado-Ramirez . We met on a military base when our boys were just one, in Oklahoma, never imagining that all these years later our lives and careers would still be intertwined. We’ve gone from being two military moms raising babies to getting to work together, support each other and watch our families and careers grow. That’s something I’ll never take for granted.
The same goes for the relationships I’ve built through the real estate industry.
Of course, our Realtor partners are a huge part of what I do, and I truly believe they know my heart is always in the right place. When I’m helping them, I genuinely want to see them succeed. I want to see their businesses grow, their ideas work and their hard work pay off. If there’s something I can create, teach, brainstorm or figure out that might help them get there, I’m going to try.
But somewhere along the way, many of those professional relationships became real friendships.
I’ve met some truly amazing people throughout the real estate industry, Realtors, lenders, title professionals, insurance agents, credit repair vendors and so many others. People I may have originally met because of work have become people I genuinely care about and consider friends.
That’s probably the part of my career that means the most to me.
Websites will change. Social media trends will come and go. Algorithms will change tomorrow, and I’ll probably have to learn another new platform or AI tool next week.
But the relationships are what last.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something People Might Not Know About Me
One thing that might surprise people about me is that I’m actually an introvert.
Considering that I’ve built a career around marketing, events, social media, networking and building relationships, people probably wouldn’t expect that. I genuinely love people and connecting with them, but when the workday is over, I’m perfectly happy going home and staying there.
Home is where I recharge.
Give me a night at home with my boys and my doggies, checking on my plants, probably rearranging one of them because I’ve convinced myself it needs different lighting, and watching some kind of crime show, documentary or murder mystery, and I’m completely content.
I’ve learned that being an introvert doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy people or building relationships. If anything, I think it’s part of why genuine connections mean so much to me. I’m not interested in networking just for the sake of networking. I like getting to know people, building real relationships and being someone they know they can count on.
But after all that people-ing?
I’m going home to my family, my dogs, my plants and my crime TV. And I’m probably not leaving again.
