Community Highlights: Meet Brandon King of ES Consulting Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon King.

Hi Brandon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My life has never moved in a straight line, and I feel that has shaped me the most. I started my career working in corporate training and eventually landed my dream job managing businesses overseas. I was doing work I enjoyed, that challenged me, and I was finally where I wanted to be professionally. Then the pandemic happened. When the pandemic started, I was in Bangalore, India, leading a new business launch. When I got back to the US, I had to quarantine, was hospitalized, and about two weeks later, I lost my dream job. That experience forced me to rethink what I wanted my career to look like and how much other people had control over how I made money.

In 2021, I decided to become an entrepreneur and started ES Consulting Agency. The plan was simple: I wanted to use my experience to help other people advance their careers. Whether that meant helping them find new jobs, improving their resumes, getting promoted, or navigating a career change. I also started helping small businesses with marketing, hiring, training, and developing an online presence.

Over the years, ES Consulting has generated income, but not enough for me to support myself full-time. So made the decision some entrepreneurs have to make: I went back to work. I found another job that ultimately was not a good fit and experienced another major career transition. This transition pushed me into an entirely different industry: Insurance, where I’ve spent the last few years building a new skill set and career. It’s definitely not what I envisioned, but it has taught me a lot about resilience, adaptability, problem-solving, and being willing to start over.

Throughout all these changes, ES Consulting has remained in the background. I have continued to help job seekers, even as my own career took me in different directions. I am now at a point where I’m ready to bring it back to the forefront, not because I have some overnight success story, but because I still believe in the idea that started my business in the first place.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
ES Consulting wasn’t my first time starting a business—more like my third attempt, but the longest-lasting and most profitable to date. There have been times when I had to step back, reassess what I was doing, and make decisions I didn’t want to make at the time.

Losing a job is difficult. Starting a business and then realizing I needed to put it on the back burner and get back to work is difficult. Changing industries is difficult as well. But with each pivot, I’ve taken lessons from the experience. The biggest one is that a setback doesn’t mean you’re moving backward; sometimes it’s just redirection.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
ES Consulting Agency (ESCA) is a career and business consulting company that helps people and small businesses move forward. What sets ESCA apart is that I approach career development from the perspective of someone who has navigated career transitions myself. I’ve been the person trying to land the next job, get promoted, reinvent my career, and the person who decided to build a business of my own. I make career and business advice practical and realistic, not a one-size-fits-all formula.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as freedom. Freedom to build a life that feels meaningful to me while being able to take care of myself and the people I care about. Early in my career, I would have defined success by job titles and salary ranges. My experiences over the past years have changed my perspective. Today, success means having options. It’s being able to make decisions because I want to rather than because I feel like I have no choice.
