Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Segura.
Hi Desiree, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started really singing when I was about 5 years old. Music has always been my passion and my one true love. Speaking in melody is a language everyone and everything can understand. I had a pretty difficult life growing up and I recently lost my husband. Singing, writing, composing… They’re the only things that have gotten me through it all.
I started DJing once COVID hit, then hosting karaoke to make ends meet. I soon started to get more shows and I’ve been pretty steady for the last few months. I have enjoyed my journey thus far and have met some incredible people along the way. Soon, I’ll be back on the stage myself doing what I was born to do: sing on any and every stage, spreading the message of love through my music and performance.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My whole life has not been easy. I grew up poor, in bad neighborhoods, without access to basic needs, and definitely an unsupportive environment. Being the oldest out of 4, so being the third pattern my always took priority. Still, I maintained great grades, participated in extracurricular activities and got myself to college. Doing everything for myself for so long wore me out, and I fell into a heavy and long depression that had me drop out of school and enter addiction. I am happy to say that I’ve been clean for over 15 years and never looked back. Even though it’s been stressful, a tunnel with no light in sight at times, I’m grateful for what I’ve been able to learn, and try to do better every day.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a lifelong musician and performer. I’ve done all kinds of contests and events from pageants to opening up for Sean Paul. If there’s a stage, I’m dying to be on it! I’m also a DJ, KJ, bartender, business owner and top tier friend. If it wasn’t for my people being around, I wouldn’t be here today.
I was really excited to win SA’s Best Female Rock Vocalist in 2025. I really felt seen in a way that I hadn’t been in a while. I’m most proud of myself when I feel too overwhelmed, like I’m drowning, and I still persevere.
I am known for my hugs! I truly believe in doing what you mean and meaning what you do. Hugs are the best, most free form of that sentiment, and we should all do it more often.
I think what makes me a little different than most people is how hyper aware I am of my environment, almost to a fault. It’s hindered me in my life but it’s also saved me more than I could count. I try to reflect this through my original music.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was really physically active. I played outside all day, played soccer and volleyball, and swam competitively against girls twice my age. I was also (still am) a nerd. I love reading, PC gaming, chess, and I used to play Dungeons and Dragons.
People say I haven’t really changed and I like that. I’ve always been headstrong, steadfast and opinionated. It’s what really helps me with actively seeking justice for my communities and others in peril. It’s what’s maintained my integrity and drive to forge onward.
I can be funny and I love to laugh! All the world’s a stage.
