Exploring Life & Business with Ronnie-Lynn Buers of Mamabear’s Hill Country Bakery LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie-Lynn Buers.

Hi Ronnie-Lynn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a former grocery store baker. I left Sprouts 14 years ago after my first child was born. Now I work for myself. My hours are more flexible and it allows me to ensure a higher quality product for my customers. I love what I do and how I am able to be a baker on my terms. I participate in local artisan markets in hill country throughout the year. I love this hill country community and I enamored at the outpouring of care and kindness I see at every event.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have overcome anorexia. I’m a strong advocate for eating disorders anonymous and without the love and support of my sponsor, fellow members and my husband I would not be here today. Baking helped as exposure therapy that aiding in turning a troubles with food into an asset. Food has become an ally that brings comfort where there once was anxiety and fear.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mamabear’s Hill Country Bakery LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am part of the Texas cottage bakery movement that exploded after COVID. I think the pandemic brought awareness to how dependent the general public is on big box chain stores to provide food and other essentials. It’s an amazing time for bakers, artists, and local businesses to supply the communities we live in with higher quality products.

I specialize in sourdough bread and pastries. I make the pastries with home made butter and fresh buttermilk. All the eggs are provided by the chickens I raise in my backyard. People come to me for various reasons but one that I am most proud of is my sugar-free pastry selection. I started baking these pastries when I noticed the amount of diabetics in attendance at markets. What started as a small observation became a welcomed change. I love seeing family light up when they see the “sugar-free’ signs. It’s endearing when they pull someone over or buy for someone later. It’s been my understanding that sometimes diabetics just want the sugar, and only the sugar removed and not something wheat, dairy, and or allergen free.

My baking business is a labor of love for my family and my community. I will always take the time to support another baking business. There is enough business for everyone willing to work hard and we only damage our own reputation by speaking ill of others.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Confession: I play the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice and other Jane Austen movies and classic musicals in the background while I bake. Lately, I’ve been listening to classic musicians like Bobby Darin, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Ella Fitzgerald, and my all time favorite, Nat King Cole. The music has a way of working itself into the food and these songs of old bring a rich full bodied flavor to the traditional baking methods I use.
