Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Sionna.
Hi Shannon , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My mama says I hummed before I spoke any words. I’ve always been surrounded by music – my parents loved everything from soft rock to doo wop to 90’s r&b. Selena was the first performer I ever saw live (The Last Concert DVD) and that was the spark that lit the flame. I participated in the ‘Our Part of Town’ Talent show and made it to the finals in 2006 at The Carver, and ended up majoring in Musical Theatre at Texas State University. Shannon Sionna came to fruition in 2017 and I released my first EP 20:16 in dedication to my late Manager and Best friend Travis Green. Since then I have been releasing various singles and my latest album ‘Vienna’ – released in 2023 was written, arranged and produced by myself and my beautiful band family. I am currently working on my next project, and am very excited to begin the production process.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I feel like struggles are the balance of life so it only makes sense that there were struggles along the way. Money has always been a mental worry personally, even though I have always been blessed enough to pull through. Travis’s death in 2016 was a pivotal moment both musically and personally. I went through a very hard time mentally and advocate for suicide awareness as much as I possibly can. I’ve had to fire various Managers, start over – and reconsider bridges while reminding myself of my moral ground along the way. I would not change anything – except for Travis to be here, but I feel like he has been guiding my steps from the other side ever since he crossed over.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a pop soul singer and songwriter, thespian, and actress. I have been in multiple theatre productions, most recently ‘Dreamgirls’ at The San Pedro Playhouse where I played Dreamgirl Michelle Morris and was the cast Dance Captain. I am currently working on my next album ‘Chasing Sunsets’, and am currently preparing to start my TV and Film career both local and nationally. I am most proud of my resiliency. There were many moments in my life where I wanted to give up and almost did – but thanks to my Lord, my village, my parents and the faith I have in myself I did it anyway. I believe what sets me apart the most is my authenticity. I cannot be anything other than genuine it is embellished in my DNA. My heart is too big and wide not to share it even if it doesn’t come back in the best condition. I am proud of my kindness and selflessness. I am learning to be in love with my patience and present moments. I’ve learned that the equation to happiness is to want nothing + do anything = have everything (Neil Pasricha) I can’t wait to master that equation next.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My breathe. Sunsets and fresh air. My village of people some of whom I’ve known since I was 6. The space I have created for myself where I lay my head down at night and the safety I have surrounded myself in have given me the ability to become creative again. I am happy that I have healed from situations that could drive a normal person, mad. My pet children (Anya: 15 and Terry: ), my beautiful and healthy relationship with both of my parents. My heath and the opportunities that are in front of me. The fact that I have never missed a bill because the universe always makes sure I am provided for. For my church home St. Luke Baptist Church for always letting me come back home no matter how long life keeps me away. That I am chosen and the best is yet to come – that makes me ecstatic!
